Vietnam’s Largest Telecommunications Carrier Launches IPTV Service Protected by VCAS for IPTV and Forensic Watermarking

AMSTERDAM — IBC 2009 — Verimatrix, setting the standard in content security technologies that enhance the value of pay-TV networks, today announced that the Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS™) for IPTV is securing IPTV services from Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Corporation (VNPT), the tier one fixed line incumbent telco in Vietnam. VCAS for IPTV is the integrated content security solution for ZTE’s ZXBIV IPTV Eyewill platform that enables the delivery of live broadcast and video-on-demand (VOD) content, along with advanced interactive features, to VNPT’s subscribers. VNPT’s IPTV service was launched in Ha Noi and Hai Phong in June, with continued rollouts in Ho Chi Minh city, Binh Duong and Dong Nai by September.

VNPT also plans to implement Verimatrix’s VideoMark™, user-specific forensic watermarking technology, as an additional layer of content security. The presence of VideoMark enables VNPT to offer more premium channels and provides flexibility to protect content beyond the set-top box environment. VideoMark is an integrated component of VCAS for IPTV, an award-winning, software-based content security solution that has been deployed with more than 250 operator customers in 37 countries which represents more than eight million screens protected. By leveraging mature, proven two-way Internet security protocols, a Public Key Infrastructure public/private key pair system and X.509 digital certificates, VCAS for IPTV eliminates the vulnerabilities related to smart card based architectures. The solution enables complete transparency for legitimate content consumption while significantly raising the level of protection against content piracy.

“Telcos in emerging markets, like Vietnam, are well suited to take advantage of offering competitive IPTV services as broadband penetration reaches a tipping point,” said Mr. Fang Hui, GM of Multimedia and Terminal Product Line, ZTE. “The integrated ZTE and Verimatrix IPTV solution provides a scalable platform to VNPT to complete its nationwide rollout and add more channel packages and interactive services.”

ZTE’s ZXBIV complete end-to-end IPTV system can easily accommodate VNPT’s phased service approach, where the first phase includes live TV, VOD, music-on-demand (MOD), TV-on-demand (TVoD). The second planned phase will add media sharing services, usage data access and e-education among others. ZTE was recently won the Frost & Sullivan’s Best Practice Award for the 2009 IPTV Equipment Vendor of the Year in part for its achievements in emerging markets.

“The VNPT deployment represents clear growth opportunities for telecommunications carries in emerging markets,” said Mr. Steve Oetegenn, chief sales and marketing officer, Verimatrix. “In order for an incumbent operator to expand, they need to add compelling new services to increase ARPU and attract new subscribers. We are thrilled to be securing new revenue streams for VNPT.”

Verimatrix will be exhibiting at IBC2009, Hall 5 Stand #B45.
