TV on the go and at home - Nokia Siemens Networks presents Mobile TV and IPTV at IBC 2007 in Amsterdam

Amsterdam, The Netherlands / Espoo, Finland — Starting September 7, 2007, Nokia Siemens Networks will present the future of television at IBC in Amsterdam and provide a live DVB-H broadcast signal on channel 23 with full coverage of the exhibition area. Visitors will be shown the latest version of the company’s Mobile TV broadcasting solution, which now offers transmission via DVB-H of even more TV channels combined with enhanced video quality, while at the same time reducing operational costs.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ IPTV solution enables service providers to offer attractive new services to their subscribers. These services include voting and betting applications, Internet chats via a TV screen, as well as easy content access and sharing on household TV sets.
Visitors will also experience the company’s Mobile TV and IPTV-related services, which include consulting, system integration in networks, network implementation and optimization, and managed services.

Nokia Siemens Networks will also show that it is well positioned to deliver Converged TV, a combination of Mobile TV and IPTV that lets users enjoy the same applications with the same look-and-feel both on their mobile phones and their TVs at home.

Mobile TV and IPTV provide network operators with new income streams as a way of compensating for falling revenues in their mobile and fixed network telephony business. At IBC 2007, Nokia Siemens Networks will show its full range of attractive new media services and the cutting-edge technology that enables them.

Mobile TV broadcasting over DVB-H

Mobile TV broadcasting allows network operators to offer subscribers a great variety of attractive services on their mobile devices – watching their favorite TV programs, for example, or participating in interactive shows with voting. The Digital Video Broadcast-Handheld (DVB-H) standard provides a superior user experience in the mobile environment, with excellent picture quality and reduced battery consumption.

At IBC 2007, Nokia Siemens Networks will introduce the new version of its Mobile TV broadcasting solution. This new version supports the leading industry standard Open Mobile Alliance Mobile Broadcast Services Enabler Suite (OMA BCAST) and offers network operators lucrative new features such as the transmission of a higher number of TV channels, even better video quality and an optimized network management solution.

The new statistical multiplexing technology makes it possible to transmit a significantly higher number of TV channels (20 – 30 %) over DVB-H, while at the same time improving the video quality as compared to the traditional constant bit rate (CBR) encoding method.
Nokia Siemens Networks’ new smart cross-industry management solution (SCRIMS) centralizes monitoring and control of all network elements in one system and thus significantly reduces operational costs.

Visitors to IBC can enjoy a large number of TV channels – including BBC, CNN, Euronews, Eurosport, Deutsche Welle and IBC Channel – on their mobile device while walking around the trade show. In addition, they can also use an interactive channel with jukebox voting and purchasing options. Transmitted on channel 23, the DVB-H live broadcast signal for this extensive Mobile TV offering will feature full coverage of the entire exhibition area. It will be provided by Nokia Siemens Networks in cooperation with the organizer IBC and transmission infrastructure provider National Grid Wireless. The broadcast signal supports the standards of the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) Project and Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), the two most important standardization bodies for Mobile TV broadcasting.

Mobile TV unicast streaming

Mobile TV unicast is a method of streaming a video service to deliver content to individuals. Unicast enables personalized TV channels. In combination with broadcasting technology it ensures optimum support of Mobile TV.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ unicast streaming solution offers excellent user experience by providing live TV channels with electronic program guide (EPG) information, video-on-demand (VoD) with preview and information via a news ticker. In addition, the solution provides splash advertising and a remote program recording function, which lets users record their favorite shows to their set-top box at home via their mobile phones.

The unicast streaming solution of Nokia Siemens Networks supports the Nokia Video Center Client and other clients based on Adobe’s Flash Lite 2 technology.

IPTV

At IBC 2007, Nokia Siemens Networks will present the latest version of its pre-integrated, end-to-end solution for IPTV – television via an IP-based broadband connection. It guarantees seamless interoperability and reduced deployment cost, time and risk while giving operators the flexibility to choose the components that best fit their needs.

Users can easily enjoy the enhanced features of this proven solution, as it enables transactions at the push of a button and offers simple-to-use visual program and video guides linked to electronic TV magazines.

Nokia Siemens Networks will also present attractive new concepts for the interactive arena such as voting and betting applications as well as access to the Internet via the TV remote control. In addition, innovative community services will be presented that enable users to navigate or chat in the Internet via their TV screens at home. This broad offering of cutting-edge IPTV features increases users’ flexibility, while at the same time enabling service providers to meet their customers’ expectations and earn new revenues. According to Infonetics Research, adoption of new IPTV services will continue to drive up IPTV ARPU, reaching a mean value of $50/month by 2010.

As an addition to Nokia Siemens Networks’ IPTV solution, Intel and Nokia Siemens Networks will demonstrate new Digital Home Networking features that enable simplified content access. The use of UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standards for Home Networking will enable users to access their PC content, such as pictures and videos, via the set-top box and share this content on the TV screen. Some of these additional easy-to-use features of the IPTV solution are enabled by the Intel® Viiv™ Processor Technology, Intel’s premier brand for consumer PCs designed for digital entertainment.

Nokia Siemens Networks will also perform a live demonstration of its customer KPN’s IPTV solution, which is successfully running in the Dutch carrier’s network and is based on Nokia Siemens Networks’ turnkey IPTV platform.

Converged TV combining Mobile TV and IPTV

Nokia Siemens Networks will also demonstrate that it is well positioned to deliver Converged TV, a combination of Mobile TV and IPTV that lets users enjoy the same applications with the same look-and-feel both on their mobile phones and at home on their TV screens. The personalized service of live voting for music clips in combination with purchasing merchandise, for instance, is available via Mobile TV and IPTV. In addition, users of Mobile TV DVB-H devices can upload their favorite pictures to Flickr.com and view them at home on their TV screens.
