Austria’s Kabelsignal Increases Capacity and Improves Reliability With Re-Encoding, Forward Error Correction and Universal EdgeQAMs

COLOGNE, GERMANY — ANGA Cable Stand #H39 — Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ: HLIT) today announced that Kabelsignal has deployed Harmonic’s market-leading IP-based video processing solutions for its kabelDigitalTV service in Austria. Part of the EVN group, Kabelsignal is one of Austria’s leading and most innovative cable operators, covering the region of Lower Austria and Burgenland. Kabelsignal was able to launch the new service quickly thanks to an integrated, easy-to-install solution and support services provided by Harmonic and its longstanding partner and regional reseller Normann Engineering GmbH.

Harmonic’s real-time IP distribution solution cost-effectively increases capacity between headends and guarantees highly reliable service through redundant forward links and forward error correction (FEC) transmission, enabled by Harmonic’s ProStream™ 1000 stream processing platform. Kabelsignal is also utilizing the Mentor™ re-encoding technology available on the ProStream 1000, as well as the market-leading NSG™ 9000 universal edgeQAM and NMX Digital Service Manager™ for its broadcast digital service.

“The combination of Harmonic’s technical expertise and reliable, high quality solutions made this installation for our kabelDigitalTV service a success,” said Herbert Vögl, CTO at Kabelsignal. “The forward error correction capabilities available with the ProStream 1000 provide IP headend redundancy, giving us more flexibility, scalability and reliability, while lowering capital and operational expenses.”

“Harmonic leads the industry in providing the technologies that enable innovative and high quality services for cable operators, and Kabelsignal was pleased to work with Harmonic on this project,” added Robert Bammer, CEO at Kabelsignal.

Harmonic’s IP-based ProStream 1000 stream processing platform is used by Kabelsignal for multiplexing, scrambling and advanced processing of MPEG streams, including redundant forward error correction transmission. The NSG 9000 platform, engineered for scalability and performance, provides Kabelsignal with an integrated digital video gateway that multiplexes broadcast content streamed over the IP network. Harmonic’s NMX Digital Service Manager provides a powerful set of tools for configuring, monitoring and managing the full lineup of compressed digital video and audio services.

“Harmonic is the world leader in edgeQAM deployments, currently powering more than 7 million VOD streams worldwide, and supporting broadcast, switched digital, modular CMTS and cable IPTV services with the NSG 9000. The ProStream 1000 is the industry’s most flexible solution for a range of stream processing needs, including transcoding, multiplexing, scrambling, FEC and more,” said Ian Graham, Vice President of Europe and Middle East Sales for Harmonic Inc.

Harmonic’s full range of cable headend, edge and access solutions will be on display May 4-6 at the ANGA Cable exhibition in Cologne, Germany, stand #H39.
