VCAS for DVB Hybrid Enables New Flexible Revenue Streams for Finecom and its Swiss Cable Operator Partners

COLOGNE, Germany — ANGA Cable 2010 — Verimatrix, setting the standard in content security technologies that enhance the value of pay-TV networks, today announced the deployment of the Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS™) for DVB Hybrid on the Finecom Telecommunications DVB-C / IP hybrid network. Combining an IP-based fibre to the home (FTTH) network with its existing DVB-C plant enables Finecom to offer its triple-play Quickline service line for high-speed broadband Internet, telephony and digital TV.

Finecom is the second largest cable operator in Switzerland with more than 200,000 subscribers in 196 municipalities. Through its ownership with Besonet and the partnership with Digital Cable Group (DCG), the Quickline pay-TV service reaches nearly 400,000 households. As part of the strategy to enhance and extend its network with cable and fibre, Finecom is transitioning from a smart card-based conditional access system to Verimatrix’s cardless solution for the new interactive TV product called Verte!.

“We feel that a the development of an interactive TV product is key to our ability to remain competitive in the Swiss market. The goal was to provide a cardless solution and Verimatrix’s software-based approach easily enables us to secure content when and where consumers want, such as the PC, iPhone and other mobile devices,” said Marc Loosli, developer manager at Finecom Telecommunications. “Verimatrix clearly understands the security considerations when migrExcellendating to a hybrid network and was extremely valuable in helping us map out our transition strategy.”

VCAS for DVB Hybrid enables pay-TV operators to combine standards-based DVB technology for broadcast distribution with the interactivity of IP-based networks using a single, robust security solution. Verimatrix developed the solution in response to demand from cable, satellite, terrestrial and IPTV providers that recognize the potential for these hybrid approaches to enhance their service offerings, boosting traditional digital broadcasting with premium video-on-demand (VOD) content.

“Finecom’s proactive hybrid network strategy in a very competitive market will no doubt position them for future growth,” said Steve Oetegenn, chief sales and marketing officer at Verimatrix. “More operators are experiencing the limitations of smart card-based security in a multi-screen world. As a digital video security provider, we offer a unique perspective on how operators can cost-effectively enhance their networks and understand security implications along the way.”
