KDDI establishes new company, MediaFLO Broadcast Planning Inc.

KDDI (Tokyo:9433) established a new company, MediaFLO Broadcast Planning Incorporated (hereafter called MediaFLO Broadcast Planning), on Wednesday May 26, 2010 with the aim of expanding into contracted multimedia broadcasting services for mobile terminals (MediaFLO) using MediaFLO™ (NASDAQ: QCOM) technology.

Five companies agreed to take a stake in the new company: TV Asahi Corporation (head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; president and representative director: Hiroshi Hayakawa; hereafter called TV Asahi), SPACE SHOWER NETWORKS INC. (head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; president and representative director: Kiyoshi Kanamori; hereafter called SPACE SHOWER NETWORKS), ASATSU-DK INC. (head office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; president: and COO: Yoji Shimizu; hereafter called ADK), DENTSU INC. (head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; president and CEO: Tatsuyoshi Takashima; hereafter called DENTSU), and Hakuhodo Incorporated (head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; president and CEO: Junji Narita; hereafter called Hakuhodo) (titles omitted and in random order).

MediaFLO Broadcast Planning examines services and business plans that exploit the characteristics of the MediaFLO™ system, with a view to expanding into contracted multimedia broadcasting services for mobile terminals expected to be launched in FY2011.

MediaFLO Broadcast Planning combines the expertise of ADK, DENTSU and Hakuhodo, advertising companies which have created a diversity of new media business, with TV Asahi, a terrestrial TV station which produces high-quality content, SPACE SHOWER NETWORKS which owns music channel Space Shower TV, and KDDI which provides entertainment services centered on “LISMO” for au mobile phones, PCs and other devices. The company examines new content services and business models that maximize the characteristics of the broadcasting infrastructure not only for mobile phones but also for digital book readers, tablet PCs and car navigation systems, areas of expected future growth.

KDDI and MediaFLO Broadcast Planning aim to pursue consultations toward participation in business with content providers and CE equipment manufacturers that support their business objectives, and make every effort to promote smooth commercialization and sound development of broadcasting in cooperation with various other concerned parties.
