Dutch digital TV market grows to 5.26 million

HOUTEN, The Netherlands — The number of digital TV connections in the Netherlands grew by 3.4 percent or 174,300 net additions during the third quarter of 2010 to 5.26 million on 30 September, according to Telecompaper’s quarterly Dutch Television Subscribers report. Digital TV increased its share of the entire TV market to 65.7 percent, as the total number of Dutch TV connections increased to 8.01 million on 30 September 2010.

Most consumers receive digital TV via cable networks. Cable accounted for 54.8 percent of digital TV connections, followed by satellite with 18.2 percent (down 0.9%), terrestrial with 17.1 percent (down 0.5%) and IPTV with 8.4 percent winning 0.7 percent during the third quarter. FTTH has a market share of 1.4 percent on the digital TV market.

“At the moment, digital penetration on cable networks amounts to 52.5 percent. We are expecting the number of total digital TV connections to grow to between 5.5 and 5.6 million at the end of this year” according to Telecompaper analyst Kamiel Albrecht.

On the digital TV market, cable operator Ziggo is the largest provider with a market share of 32.9 percent. KPN consolidated its position as the second-largest digital TV provider in the Netherlands, ending September 2010 with almost 22 percent of the digital TV market, followed by cable operator UPC with 16.3 percent and satellite TV provider Canal Digitaal with 15.7 percent.
