Rovi Media Cloud Enables Rapid Development of Connected Media Products on Multiple Platforms and Devices

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and LAS VEGAS — Rovi Corporation (Nasdaq:ROVI) today announced Rovi Media Cloud, a suite of entertainment web services that is designed to enable the rapid creation of innovative new products, services and applications for the connected consumer. Rovi Media Cloud is a comprehensive set of entertainment focused web services that includes advertising, metadata, recommendations, search, media recognition, and user and device management capabilities. With these services, consumer electronic (CE) manufacturers, service providers (SPs), online, mobile and other application developers can quickly and easily differentiate their offerings with sophisticated capabilities that enhance the connected entertainment experience.

According to the industry analyst firm The Diffusion Group, the market for Internet-connected living room devices is expected to surge to 540 million by 2014. Consumers will soon be able to access a near infinite amount of digital media content anytime, anywhere and on almost any device. A comprehensive set of web services that allows developers to create cross-platform entertainment products, services and applications is needed to fulfill the demand for compelling and unique experiences for users.

Rovi Media Cloud helps companies address this challenge by providing a set of flexible and integrated APIs that allow them to quickly build and enhance their products with access to up-to-date, relevant entertainment metadata, recommendations and related capabilities. By utilizing Rovi technology, CE manufacturers, service providers and online, mobile and other application developers will be able to turn devices such as internet connected TVs, tablets, mobile phones, PCs and set-top boxes (STBs) into a truly connected media experience for consumers. To support the launch of Rovi Media Cloud, Rovi is launching a developer portal at developer.rovicorp.com, where developers can request access to APIs and learn more about the services from Rovi.

In addition, Rovi announced that Samsung is collaborating with Rovi on its Advertising Service using the Rovi Media Cloud. Samsung “Your Video” portal includes Rovi advertising capabilities, a Rovi TotalGuide component, which provides an advanced cloud-based advertising platform for Samsung consumers to view engaging and interactive ads.

Rovi is serving data via Rovi Media Cloud to Elgato’s EyeTV, the popular software for Macintosh computers for watching and recording TV. Rovi is also in discussions with Eyecon Technologies to power a cross-platform media experience platform for smartphones. With the Eyecon application installed on an Android device, iPhone or iPad/iPod, users can search and preview local and internet content on their mobile device, and use the mobile device to play it on a networked TV. Rovi will have a number of other products, services and applications, including some of its own entertainment applications, available for demonstrations during CES.

“The ubiquity of cross-platform Internet connectivity, along with consumers’ increasing appetite for digital media, is driving our customers toward flexible and scalable cloud-based solutions,” said Corey Ferengul, executive vice president, product management and marketing, Rovi Corporation. “Rovi Media Cloud is a natural step for Rovi to expose its solutions to power the next wave of products, services and applications that will allow consumers even more opportunities to find the entertainment content that matters most to them. By opening up access to our data and technologies through APIs, we believe our customers and third party developers can more quickly and easily develop leading-edge solutions across all types of devices.”
