The Nordic IPTV Standards Initiative, NIPSI

Monday, November 26th, 2007

NIPSI is a response to a general need of standards on the Nordic IPTV market – an invitation to actors on the Nordic IPTV market to start up discussions on how to move towards a better standardization within the area.

A number of IPTV operators have launched IPTV services and are moving to a second stage with additional interactive services. The evolution of new interactive applications is however slowed down by the fact that IPTV operators use different proprietary middleware solutions. Applications need to integrate with a large number of different Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) in order to reach 100% of the market.

NIPSI is an invitation to actors on the Nordic IPTV market to start up discussions on how to move towards a better standardization within the area. Note that the initiative does not aim at starting up a new standardizations institute. We are rather looking at an informal process with the goal to commit to existing standards defined by other institutes or standards made up by NIPSI while waiting for industry standards. We hope that NIPSI may influence standardization institutes to also target the needs of the IPTV market.

Companies that are commercially active on the Nordic IPTV market and that can actively contribute to the standardization process are welcome to apply for membership. Initially we are welcoming IPTV operators (and their middleware vendors), Content providers and Service providers (and their application developers). Later on we may also invite other vendors to take part in the work if IPTV operators and service providers find this appropriate.
