DivX Plus® Streaming to Feature on Broadcom’s Latest Platforms for Set-top Boxes and DTVs

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — IBC2011 — Rovi Corporation (Nasdaq:ROVI) today announced that it is working with Broadcom to integrate its recently unveiled DivX Plus Streaming technology into Broadcom’s System-on-a Chip (SoC) platforms for set-top boxes and connected Digital TVs. Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq:BRCM) is a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications. Lightweight and easy to deploy, DivX Plus Streaming offers support for 1080p video resolution, subtitles, as well as a range of smooth trick-play capabilities that have historically only been associated with Blu-ray Discs. DivX Plus Streaming complements the advanced digital entertainment feature set of Broadcom’s platforms and is designed to enable service providers and consumer electronics manufacturers to deliver a full-featured over-the-top movie and TV entertainment experience. Rovi will be demonstrating DivX Plus Streaming ported to a Broadcom platform at the Rovi booth at IBC 2011 in Hall 5, Stand A31.

“We are pleased to build on our successful collaboration with Rovi,” said Aidan O’Rourke, senior director of marketing, IP Set-Top Box, Broadcom. “DivX Plus Streaming complements our advanced Set-Top and Connected TV technologies, delivering a compelling, high-quality 1080p entertainment experience to subscribers.”

“Broadcom’s plan to integrate DivX Plus Streaming emphasizes the flexibility of our embedded streaming solution, which is designed for easy implementation on a broad range of platforms,” said Corey Ferengul, EVP Products at Rovi Corporation. “For service providers and consumer electronics manufacturers, DivX Plus Streaming provides a true end-to-end solution for encoding, secure delivery and viewing of streamed video content to connected devices; however, ultimately, it’s about enabling them to deliver a better consumer entertainment experience.”

DivX Plus Streaming offers smooth resolution scaling to help maintain optimal visual quality as bandwidth fluctuates and helps to provide a buffer-free playback experience. DivX Plus Streaming is based on a flexible DRM framework that is capable of powering a variety of distribution models including electronic sell through, timed rentals or subscription, as well as an array of consumption scenarios such as streaming, downloads, and side-load transfer to enable both online and offline playback.

To develop DivX Plus Streaming, Rovi built upon core DivX® technologies recognized by millions of consumers around the world for delivering great video performance, visual quality, and multi-screen interoperability. The solution also utilizes trusted digital rights management technology currently used by a number of online retailers offering movies in the DivX format including WB Shop, Media Markt, and Film Fresh. To promote device integration for DivX Plus Streaming, Rovi is building out the existing certification program used for DivX technology device validation and compatibility – a program that has resulted in shipment by top-tier manufacturers of over 500 million DivX-compatible consumer electronics to date.
