Key Deployment in Asia for VCAS for IPTV and VCAS for Internet TV Featuring Enhanced HLS Security for Premium Pay-OTT Services

LONDON — IP&TV World Forum — Verimatrix, the specialist in securing and enhancing revenue for multi-screen digital TV services around the globe, today announced that its Verimatrix Video Content Authority (VCAS™) 3 solutions have been selected for the IPTV and multi-screen upgrade at Taiwan’s largest telecom operator, Chunghwa Telecom (TAIEX: 2412, NYSE: CHT). Ericsson (STKM: ERIC, NASDAQ: ERIC) announced its selection by Chunghwa to lead the deployment of this significant upgrade, with Verimatrix solutions addressing all aspects of content protection and revenue security for the project.

Chunghwa Telecom, one of the most experienced and successful IPTV service providers in the world, is responding to growing customer demand for multi-screen video services that can be enjoyed on connected TVs, PC/Macs, smartphones and tablets with a significantly enhanced solution combining IPTV and over-the-top (OTT) delivery. This next-generation multi-network deployment will feature the Verimatrix award-winning VCAS™ for IPTV and VCAS™ for Internet TV security solutions, which integrate security techniques for video over managed and unmanaged networks with a single security authority head-end.

“Chunghwa Telecom represents a significant upgrade in the video industry as it marks a major network transition to offer more advanced multi-screen video services,” said Steve Oetegenn, chief sales and marketing officer for Verimatrix. “We are seeing other top-tier IPTV, satellite and cable operators also evaluating their network migration strategies in order to stay competitive in this new world of pay TV. Verimatrix is focused on helping these services providers implement a flexible rights management strategy across a combination of managed and unmanaged video delivery networks.”

The Verimatrix software-based revenue security solutions are integrated components of Ericsson’s Multiscreen TV and Media Connect platforms that will help extend Chunghwa Telecom’s brand and subscriber relationship beyond the set-top box (STB). This customer win represents the 10th joint customer since the Verimatrix-Ericsson relationship was established.

Other notable deployments include Brazilian telco Global Village Telecom (GVT), a subsidiary of French media group Vivendi, Romanian incumbent telco Romtelecom, Com Hem in Sweden, and German Telco EWE TEL.

The VCAS architecture provides a complete, integrated suite of solutions to secure video delivery to traditional STBs and the widest variety of Internet TV-enabled devices. The flagship VCAS for IPTV and VCAS for Internet TV solutions are key to this new generation of services, both upgrading the existing delivery infrastructure and extending deployment reach with multi-screen capabilities using state-of-the-art adaptive rate streaming technologies.

VCAS for Internet TV provides a complete digital TV security solution for OTT services over networks implementing the HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) protocol. The basic HLS security, which includes AES-128 encryption, has been extended by Verimatrix with specific pay-TV security techniques in order to qualify for licensing of premium content and to adequately protect pay-TV services to iOS and Android devices, Windows and Mac OS computing platforms, connected TVs/STBs, etc. The most essential security techniques commonly used in pay-TV systems for managed networks, such as IPTV and DVB, are client device authentication and subscriber entitlement management, both provided as standard in the VCAS for Internet TV key management from Verimatrix.
