MOSCOW — Rostelecom (MICEX:RTKM, RTS:RTKM), Russia’s national telecom operator, is driving towards the digitalization of television across Russia and has selected to work with Motorola Mobility, Inc (NYSE: MMI) to expand its digital TV services across the country, which will include the introduction of new video on demand and interactive TV experiences.

“Today’s announcement marks the beginning of a strategic collaboration between Rostelecom and Motorola Mobility to bring leading edge solutions and services to the Russian market,” said Pavel Zaitsev, vice president – Director for Commerce, Rostelecom. “As an established leader in IPTV and video delivery, Motorola’s solutions are both innovative and cost effective and will help us to differentiate and attract new customers as we grow our business across the country.”

“We are proud to be working closely with Rostelecom, which is one of the most exciting companies in the digital TV space today. Our ability to deliver game-changing customer experience solutions that will enable Rostelecom to bring new services to market quickly and cost-effectively is paramount,” said Steve McCaffery, vice president and general manager, Home business EMEA, Motorola Mobility. “This signals a further step in Motorola’s growth in Russia, and we’re pleased that Rostelecom recognizes our ability – which includes a dedicated, highly skilled software team in Saint Petersburg – to support their ambitious goals and we look forward to working closely with them in the future.”

In a move that will enable Rostelecom to differentiate itself in the market by offering rich entertainment experiences, Motorola’s VIP1003 and VIP1963 IPTV set-tops will be deployed in early 2012. The VIP1003 is a compact, cost-effective high definition IP set-top, ideal for single set-top deployments; whilst the VIP1963 is a superior, high definition IP media center with a built-in hard-disk drive for personal video recorder functionality. It provides consumers with the added convenience of watching one channel while enabling personalized recording control of another channel – as well as the flexibility of watching on-demand services whenever they want.
