Intel Licenses Reference Design Kit from Comcast to Speed Development and Deployment of Set-Top Box Solutions; First Silicon Deployment Uses Intel Puma and Intel Atom Processor CE4200

  • Intel’s first-to-ship silicon solution supports common framework that cable operators can easily deploy.
  • The XG1 multi-tuner gateway Comcast is using with its X1 service is based on the Intel® Puma™, Intel’s gateway solution, and Intel® Atom™ CE4200 Media Processor, and is shipping in select U.S. markets.
  • Next-generation set-top-box solutions will usher in new television experiences across multiple devices in the home.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) today announced it has licensed the Reference Design Kit (RDK) from Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK), which will allow it to work with Comcast and other cable operators to develop and deploy new set-top box solutions for consumers around the globe. The first deployed RDK silicon solution in the industry is featured in the XG1 multi-tuner gateway Comcast is using with its X1 service, and is based on the Intel® Puma™ and the Intel® Atom™ CE4200 Media Processor. The Intel Puma family features specialized network processing capabilities including industry-leading DOCSIS (Data on Cable System Interface Specification) for broadband cable connectivity.

“We are excited to be working with Comcast and the RDK ecosystem to evolve television with premium entertainment experiences on all screens in the home,” said Alan Crouch, Intel vice president and general manager, Service Provider Division. “With the RDK, TV will become more personal, social and immersive while keeping the TV viewing experience simple and fun. The ultimate winners are consumers who have more entertainment choices with powerful services that are easy to use.”

The RDK is a pre-integrated software bundle that creates a common framework for powering tru2way®, IP or hybrid set-top boxes and video gateway devices. It accelerates the development and deployment of next-generation video services such as cloud-based functionality and improved guide experiences. Comcast licenses the RDK to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), semiconductor manufacturers, software vendors, software integrators and multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) to create a community of innovators focused on bringing rich, multi-screen TV home entertainment experiences to consumers faster.

“Our goal is to make the RDK available to companies such as Intel Corporation in order to accelerate development of an advanced software solution throughout the industry and across geographies,” said Steve Reynolds, senior vice president, CPE and Home Network for Comcast. “Support from Intel and others is helping to pave the way for broader industry adoption and deployment of this platform that enables developers, operators and device vendors to create rich, multi-screen TV home entertainment experiences and bring them to consumers faster.”
