Entry-level Zapper From GlobalSat Leverages Entropic’s Cost-Optimized EN7100 to Raise the Bar on Performance and Quality, With Its ARM-Based Architecture and Advanced Security Features

BEIJING — China Content Broadcasting Network Exhibition; Hall: 3; Booth # 3403) — GlobalSat, a leading Chinese manufacturer of satellite and terrestrial products and Entropic (Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home, introduced today the GOOSAT S1-50HD, the latest high performance set-top box solution for the global Free-to-Air (FTA) Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) zapper market.

The entry-level FTA zapper market continues to expand worldwide, with service providers looking for ARM®-based set-top box solutions to take advantage of the architecture’s inherent high performance processing power. GlobalSat chose Entropic’s latest STB system-on-a-chip (SoC), the EN7100, as it uses a single-core ARM® Cortex™- A9 processor with up to 2500 DMIPS and advanced security features. Additionally, Entropic’s EN7100 SoC family delivers unprecedented price performance and delivers up to 1GHz operation in a “LP” low-power process node for low power consumption.

Being DVB-S / DVB-S2 compliant, the next generation of GlobalSat Zapper HD box – GOOSAT S1-50HD – is capable of providing both traditional TV and radio broadcast and IP-based content. GlobalSat and Entropic worked very closely to advance the performance of this Linux-based STB by implementing strong multi-media player functionality; efficient network capabilities; DLNA compliance; and 3G Wireless, USB2.0, Wi-Fi and multi-picture functions.

Alvin Sun, vice president, World Sales and Marketing, GlobalSat, commented, “Our service provider customers are interested in HD zapper solutions that provide basic television services yet still offer the highest in performance and security.” He added, “In working with Entropic, we were able to cost-effectively develop an HD set-top box zapper that meets the needs of our service provider customers and includes added features such as ensuring very low power consumption in the design.”

“GlobalSat has been the long-time partner of Entropic and continues to adopt our SoC solutions to meet various SD and HD market segment requirements,” said Patrick Henry, president and CEO, Entropic. “Our newly launched EN7100 SoC family enabled GlobalSat to deliver a Linux-based HD zapper solution that can meet the complex needs of today’s FTA satellite service providers – that are looking to raise the performance bar for their HD zapper products.”

Availability

The GOOSAT S1-50HD will be available in Sept. 2013. Entropic’s EN7100 SoC family is currently available to early access customers and technology partners. Entropic’s EN7100 family of STB SoCs will be in full product production in 2H of 2013.
