OSLO, Norway, and ROHRDORF-THANSAU, Germany — Opera Software and German set-top-box manufacturer KATHREIN TechnoTrend (KTT) today announced that the Opera Devices Software Development Kit (SDK) will launch on a variety of KATHREIN TechnoTrend set-top box models.

The Opera Devices SDK will be used to render exciting over-the-top services including video-on-demand and Smart TV portals for KATHREIN TechnoTrend, delivering a more interactive experience for viewers. Opera Software brings standards support and superior performance to the rendering of HbbTV services.

An industry-leading toolkit for developing Smart TV solutions for original equipment manufacturers, the Opera Devices SDK takes connected devices including TVs and set-top boxes to the next level, with superior performance on streaming and web-content rendering. The Opera Devices SDK features advanced support for web standards, such as HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, SVG, 2D Canvas and WebGL.

“Today’s viewers are rightly demanding more from their home entertainment,” said Aneesh Rajaram, Senior Vice-President for TV & Devices, Opera Software. “The Opera Devices SDK helps set-top-box and other device manufacturers to bring a more interactive and entertaining experience to their customers, and KATHREIN TechnoTrend users are set to enjoy what they have in store.”

Ralf Exler, CTO of KATHREIN TechnoTrend, explained: “Opera’s leading HTML5 browser gives us great flexibility to provide a variety of new hybrid receiver solutions based on our open API middleware. We are delighted about the commitment and support Opera has shown to accomplish this task in such a swift period.”

The Opera Devices SDK will power all hybrid models of set-top boxes with KATHREIN TechnoTrend’s own middleware solutions, with integration to third-party content-aggregation middleware. These set-top boxes will ship internationally later in 2013.

The new set-top boxes will be previewed from today at the ANGA COM exhibition and congress on 4-6 June in Cologne, Germany. Stop by Hall 10.2, Booth B19, to see the set-top boxes powered by Opera in action.
