Cable Bahamas expands fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) product

NASSAU — Cable Bahamas announced today the expansion of its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) service offering to over one hundred homes in Victoria Gardens.

“Our fibre to the home service has been incredibly successful,” said Cable Bahamas Vice President of Marketing David Burrows. “FTTH is new technology to many providers, but not to us; our first deployment was over 10 years ago. We now have FTTH service in New Providence, Abaco and Eleuthera.” Mr Burrows continued, “We made the conscious decision several years ago that all future builds would include this cutting edge technology and we are excited to announce the next phase of the programme, the first overbuild neighbourhood with this product.”

Consumers in Victoria Gardens, New Providence, located off north Gladstone Road will be the first neighbourhood in the country to be transitioned to a 100% fibre service. The Victoria Gardens rollout will bring ultra-fast Internet speeds to over 100 homes, joining the hundreds of homes in New Providence, Abaco and Eleuthera with FTTH infrastructure.

“We’re already delivering the fastest broadband Internet available in The Bahamas with our REVON Extreme broadband product with speeds up to 70 megabits per second placing The Bahamas as the fastest broadband country in the region,” Mr Burrows said.

“Cable Bahamas’ rapid speed increases in broadband services in 2013 and 2014, with little to no change in cost, has resulted in the company having both the fastest speed and the lowest cost-per-megabit service in The Bahamas. The 70 Mb/s REVON service is just $1.41 per megabit, only one-quarter of the average global cost,” Mr Burrows added.

Cable Bahamas’ fibre-rich distribution network makes it possible to deliver such high speeds directly to homes in The Bahamas. John Gomez, Vice President of Engineering for Cable Bahamas stated, “This is the kind of revolutionary technology that our customers expect of us, and which we have designed our network to deliver. This is just the beginning. With our FTTH product, we are able to offer symmetrical broadband services up to 1 gigabit per second to homes.”

Mr Gomez said that business customers have been enjoying fibre-based Internet and data service for more than 15 years. “We have already deployed this enhanced fibre service to over 2,000 business customers in the Bahamas,” Mr Gomez continued, “and now we have the capacity and capabilities to scale our REVON Fibre product to 10 gigabits per second to our business customers.”

With this amount of capacity available within a home, Cable Bahamas expects to expand its service offerings. “We will offer a feature-rich IPTV [Internet protocol television] service as well as a number of new enhancements that our customers have been asking for,” said the cable executive.

“This is really nothing new for our team,” Mr Gomez asserted. “Our engineering and IT groups have been doing this for years in both Florida and The Bahamas, putting this level of service in front of thousands of residents in Orlando, Southwest Florida and into the top resorts in both markets. That experience is what our subscribers here at home will continue to take advantage of.”
