Teleste at IBC2015: Combining Broadcast TV and LTE Technologies Brings Premium Linear TV and OTT Services for Terrestrial Antenna Households

  • The new innovation allows operators to offer versatile TV, mobile and data services in terrestrial antenna networks by combining terrestrial TV broadcast technology with mobile LTE technology

TURKU, Finland — Teleste, an international technology company that develops and offers video and broadband technologies and related services, announced today that the company will introduce a new solution that combines DVB-T and LTE technologies to transmit high-quality broadcast TV and data services for households with outdoor antenna. The new innovation, called LTvE™, enables operators to expand and diversify service offering to customers, especially in the areas not covered by the HFC access network. For consumers, this means that they can enjoy traditional broadcast TV as well as versatile video services, such as OTT, video-on-demand and pay TV even in the areas where they have not previously been available or where the quality of services has been inadequate.

The LTvE™ solution carries traditional TV broadcast through DVB-T technology, while video and data services are transmitted over bi-directional IP connections enabled by the LTE network. The LTE signal is received by a directional outdoor antenna and transmitted to an in-house network via the existing coaxial cabling and wall outlets.

The solution yields a stronger LTE signal that enables considerably faster data transmission speeds. The availability of the LTE signal is also strengthened throughout the house via a small indoor antenna. In addition, high-quality TV broadcast is quaranteed through reduced LTE interference.

“Even as the demand of versatile TV and video services keeps increasing around the world, there are still many areas even in Europe that are not covered by the HFC network. Teleste wishes to provide operators a means to also expand their service offering in cases where it would not be economically feasible to bring the HFC to each individual household. The LTvE™ solution is a unique way to address this goal”, stated Pasi Järvenpää, SVP of Research and Development for Teleste.

“During this past summer Teleste performed a field trial of the LTvE™ solution, and the feedback from our test group shows that there is a definite interest in versatile video and data services among terrestrial TV households and in areas of dispersed settlement. In addition to broadband connections with doubled speed, the test group has been especially pleased with the fact that fast and convenient deployment of the solution is possible without making major house renovations”, continued Mr. Järvenpää.
