SEOUL, Korea, and OSLO, Norway — Telechips, a leading Korean semiconductor company, will leverage Opera TV solutions to deliver a seamless Smart TV experience to its audience. With the support of the Opera Devices SDK (Software Development Kit) 4.x series and the Opera TV Store, Telechips will be able to demonstrate live and over-the-top (OTT) premium content streams from partners, such as BBC iPlayer and hundreds of other TV apps.

TV apps – An opportunity for manufacturers

Futuresource estimates that by 2017, over 80% of all TV sets sold worldwide will be enabled for online connectivity and smart features. OTT viewership is now growing exponentially and the Millennial viewing habits are the catalyst for TV programming moving to apps. Smart TV, IP-enabled set-top boxes, game consoles, Blu-ray Disc players and low-cost digital-media adapters will further drive this trend. These are opportunities for TV-centric connected-device manufacturers to differentiate themselves with unique features and content.

The Opera Devices SDK is a toolkit for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to develop Smart TV solutions. In the 4.x series, a Chromium/Blink-based TV rendering engine with advanced HTML5 capabilities and web-content-rendering powers premium OTT content, delivering a more interactive experience for viewers. It also supports TV industry standards like HbbTV and offers hundreds of entertaining, HTML5-based TV apps in the Opera TV Store, significantly shortening time to market for manufacturers.

“The TV landscape is changing. Viewers are not only embracing online videos available on-demand, but also choosing to consume them through TV apps on their home entertainment devices,” says Aneesh Rajaram, Senior Vice-President for TV & Devices, Opera Software, “As a technology enabler of this fast-evolving trend, Opera looks forward to cooperating with Telechips in bringing a consumer-ready OTT experience to its customers.”

“Having serviced this TV market for over 10 years, Opera provides the depth of experience in the connected-TV arena, along with strong partnerships with industry players, as well as active participation in standards organizations,” says Yongkwon Lee, Marketing VP, Telechips. He adds, “Our cooperation with Opera is an essential step towards making our market-ready OTT platforms available for a broad array of connected-device OEMs and major service operators.”
