Antel Selects Elemental for Mobile Broadband and Fiber Network OTT Services

  • Uruguay’s telecommunications market leader leverages full suite of Elemental video solutions to power TIER III Datacenter and stream one of the world’s largest sporting events this year

PORTLAND, Ore./MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay — Elemental Technologies, the leader in software-defined video solutions, today announced that Uruguayan state-owned telecommunications company Administración Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (Antel) has selected Elemental video processing to power its new TIER III Datacenter, one of the most advanced and state-of-the-art datacenters in Latin America.

Antel is using Elemental solutions to bring live streamed coverage of the one of the world’s biggest sporting events this summer to millions of viewers across Uruguay, joining multiple premier broadcasters, pay TV providers and sports programmers that plan to use Elemental software to enable delivery of event coverage.

Uruguay has the highest broadband penetration rate in Latin America, including more than 74 percent of households across the country, with more than 62 percent of those having fiber-to-the-home (FTTH). Antel LTE network performance is one of the best worldwide, with 90 percent coverage.

Antel’s over-the-top (OTT) VeraTV service is growing in popularity, offering 40 free live channels and video-on-demand (VOD) as well as premium content services. The headend for these services uses Elemental Delta, Elemental Live and Elemental Server video processing and delivery products as well as Elemental Conductor to manage workflows. Elemental Delta is specifically used for CDN origination and live, VOD and time-shifted OTT services.

Antel employs Elemental software-defined video solutions to encode feeds from a broadcast center in Rio, Brazil for delivery via Antel´s VeraTV multiscreen platform. Because Elemental solutions are instantly scalable, Antel is able to spool up as many processes as needed at any given moment to serve the number of channels required, minimizing the impact of busy sports days on the service and quality received by subscribers.

The new datacenter will also provide the platform that allows Antel to expand the Uruguayan online streaming industry.

“The implementation at Antel is truly impressive and a great indication of the way that Elemental provides solutions at enterprise scale,” said Keith Wymbs, CMO at Elemental. “This new datacenter is set to be a center of excellence and a model for the region and for the world. We are very proud that Elemental has been named as the strategic technology partner to take Antel into the future of online and mobile content delivery.”
