Verizon Digital Media Services platform helps deliver Newsy’s growing linear and on-demand video distribution

LOS ANGELES — Verizon Digital Media Services announced today that it is powering the streaming and syndication of linear and on-demand video content for Newsy, an over-the-top news network delivering the day’s top stories for the next generation of news consumers. The Verizon Digital Media Services platform ensures that Newsy viewers can watch high-quality video across OTT platforms, connected televisions and mobile devices.

“Verizon Digital Media Services has proven that it has the technical expertise and scale to deliver content that Newsy needs to power our fast-growing linear and on-demand video offering,” said Blake Sabatinelli, general manager of Newsy. “With millions of hours of content delivered monthly, Verizon provides our advertisers with the ability to reach our audience quickly and effectively.”

Newsy creates hundreds of video news segments per month and produces “Newsy Live,” a 24 x 7 linear news channel. Newsy’s coverage spans world and national news, policy, culture, science and technology, and its videos are monetized through digital advertising.

The Uplynk Video Streaming service and Edgecast Content Delivery Network, two essential components of the Verizon Digital Media Services platform, are used by Newsy to ingest, encode, package and deliver video to audiences across devices. Verizon’s platform also helps Newsy deliver its linear and on-demand assets to third-party OTT partners including Roku, Apple TV and Sling TV without the need for additional encoding or packaging.

“Newsy is an innovative platform that brings millennials the news that they crave, and our service helps ensure that Newsy’s content is accessible to that audience on the devices they use most,” said Ralf Jacob, president, Verizon Digital Media Services. “We take pride in offering a platform that can deliver VOD and linear content anytime and anywhere, while also streamlining the process for our most important partners like Newsy.”

Newsy users average nearly 1 hour per session on the company’s linear channels. The company is projected to draw more than 1 billion video views by the end of 2016.

In the past year, Newsy has launched its award-winning content on most of the major OTT platforms, including Apple TV, where it was named a Best New App for 2015, as well as Sling TV, Watchable from Comcast, Pluto TV, Roku, Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV and Xumo. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of The E.W. Scripps Company (NYSE: SSP).

In addition to Newsy, Verizon Digital Media Services powers many of the world’s leading broadcasters, cable networks and OTT service providers within the media and entertainment industry.
