MStar Adopts Dolby MS12 V2 To Bring Dolby Atmos TO TVs Everywhere

  • Dolby Atmos for IC Implementation to Greatly Expand Dolby Atmos Footprint in Consumer TV Market

SAN FRANCISCO / HSINCHU — Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: DLB) and MStar Semiconductor, Inc., a leading semiconductor company for display and digital home solutions, today announced a solution to deliver immersive Dolby Atmos experiences to consumer TV sets worldwide. MStar has made available today the latest iteration of Dolby Multistream Decoder MS12, which provides TV manufacturers with a single-package solution for decoding premium audio content worldwide — broadcast, file-based, OTT/VOD services, and pay-TV operators. This is the first generally available integrated circuit (IC) in the world to support MS12 v2.2 GA as well as Dolby Vision, enabling OEMs across the globe to bring the latest in advanced audiovisual experiences to mainstream TVs.

A leap forward from surround sound, Dolby Atmos delivers a breakthrough experience that leverages the latest Dolby advances in sound technology. MStar’s adoption of MS12 v2 will make it possible for OEMs to integrate the key benefits of Dolby Atmos – including encompassing sound, lifelike nuance, and crisply rendered speech – directly into the TV. TV OEMs will now be able to offer precise placement and movement of individual sounds without the need for external speakers, further simplifying the process of experiencing Dolby Atmos.

“MStar has been a consistent early adopter of Dolby technologies,” said Sean Lin, Corporate VP, MStar. “We’re proud to yet again be first to market with a solution that will enable OEMs to easily integrate Dolby Atmos into their TV product lines.”

“We’re delighted with MStar’s continued commitment to bringing breathtaking, encompassing sound to more people,” said Giles Baker, SVP, Consumer Entertainment Group, Dolby Laboratories. “We look forward to working closely with the large number of our TV OEM partners who will now be able to use MStar’s ICs to deliver the Dolby Atmos experience to consumers, in addition to Dolby Vision.”

The Dolby Multistream Decoder MS12 reduces the complexity of integrating multiple audio technologies, and also provides a consistent volume level across programs and sources to make listening more enjoyable. With available support for Dolby AC-4, Dolby MS12 also paves the way for next-generation audio experiences like ATSC 3.0 in the United States.

Dolby Atmos is supported in over ten major streaming and pay-TV services, including Netflix and Vudu, with over 200 home releases to date mixed in Dolby Atmos.
