“NEXTGEN TV is the future of broadcast TV – with an over-the-air viewing experience that offers brilliant video, clearer audio and better interactivity,” said Brian Markwalter, senior vice president of research and standards, CTA. “The new test suite is the force behind the NEXTGEN TV logo and is an important step for manufacturers to ensure that consumers can easily tell which devices offer the upgrades and interactivity of NEXTGEN TV.”

The test suite includes over 135 tests covering 150 unique requirements across audio, video, captions, interactivity, service changes and more. CTA’s NEXTGEN TV logo, created in coordination with broadcasting companies, device manufacturers and other ATSC implementors is the logo is associated with products and services that meet ATSC 3.0 standards.

CTA also announced the name Voice + (pronounced “voice plus”) for the enhanced audio dialogue licensed NEXTGEN TV products offer. CTA’s Video Division Board approved the Voice + name and products can begin using the name with their 2021 models.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, more U.S. adults (65%) watch video content more often, with the TV serving as the primary screen for entertainment for almost all (92%) Americans, a recent CTA study found. Initial roll out of NEXTGEN TV across broadcast markets began this year, offering new ways for viewers to see, hear and interact with TV programming. Over time, NEXTGEN TV, enhanced with internet content, will allow viewers to get the most out of live sports, live news, live events and more, in real time.
