Single Chip NMI500 IC to Enable Ubiquitous Digital Television for China’s 600+ Million Cellular Subscribers

LAKE FOREST, Calif. — Newport Media, an innovative fabless semiconductor company supplying products to the mobile broadcast media industry, today announces the world’s first complete 65nm CMOS single-chip solution for the China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting (CMMB) digital television standard. The NMI500 Sundance C mobile digital TV receiver integrates an RF tuner, demodulator and all required memory into a single monolithic CMOS device.

“Newport Media’s CMMB SOC will help transform the Mobile TV industry in China,” said Mohy Abdelgany, president and chief executive officer for Newport Media. “The NMI500 and complete CMMB software platform that we provide optimally addresses the price point and ease of design requirements of the Chinese market. Leveraging customer relationships established with our DVB-T/H and ISDB-T products, Newport Media will be able to quickly launch compelling CMMB handsets with major Chinese handset market companies.”

Key features of the NMI500 include the world’s lowest power consumption and excellent RF performance including 120dB of variable gain, and greater than 55dB of adjacent channel selectivity. The SOC integrates UHF and S-band receiver, CMMB demodulator, plus all necessary memory. No other external memory, baluns or loop filters are required to create a complete solution with a very low bill of materials.

The device is manufactured using low-cost, 65 nanometer complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process technology and is packaged in a fine pitch plastic ball grid array (FBGA). Volume production is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2009.
