PTCL to launch Pakistan’s first IPTV network

BEIJING, China — Irdeto (JSE:NPN), the global expert in content security for digital TV, IPTV and mobile television, and Huawei Technologies, China’s leading telecom equipment manufacturer, today jointly announced they have signed an agreement with Pakistan Telecommunication Co Ltd (PTCL) to provide an end-to-end IPTV solution to the 1 tier telecom operator.

The agreement will enable PTCL to launch IPTV services across Pakistan, and to provide its subscribers with an array of new interactive video and internet offerings. Huawei’s leading-edge IPTV equipment has been integrated with the Irdeto IPTV content security solution, which encrypts and protects content from the VOD server to the set-top box on broadband platforms.

As part of the new agreement, Irdeto’s content security technology for IPTV, combined with Huawei’s middleware, video-on-demand server and set-top boxes, will be supplied to PTCL. Pakistan Telecommunication expects to launch the new IPTV service for a first-phase group of 20,000 subscribers in the first half of 2007.

“Irdeto and Huawei entered into a strategic partnership earlier this year to jointly provide end-to-end solutions into the worldwide IPTV market, and the new deal outlined today with PTCL is projected to be just the first of many IPTV advances generated by that partnership,” said Graham Kill, Chief Executive Officer of Irdeto.

“Irdeto has a world-recognized record of developing the highest level of security for content across IPTV networks, and that provides the perfect complement to Huawei’s next-generation IPTV equipment and network solutions,” said Zhang Guoxing, President of Digital Media Product Line, Huawei. “Together, Huawei and Irdeto have been able to provide PTCL with a best-of-class IPTV system.”

The Irdeto IPTV security solution integrated into the Huawei IPTV system provides for a full video product and service offering, including broadcast TV, video on demand, PVR and Time Shift TV. Within the Irdeto IPTV security framework, content is securely stored and distributed across any broadband IP network and the corresponding content rights can be managed on an individual subscriber and/or device basis.

Irdeto offers Telcos an unparalleled security record, nearly 40 years of experience in pay TV technology, and a choice of a secure software client, or Irdeto’s revolutionary smart card with software that can be periodically updated over the network. The world’s top providers of premium content know and trust the Irdeto name, so companies allied with Irdeto get access to early-release video content that can be made available via on-demand services. That translates into premium offerings for subscribers and subscriber premiums for IPTV operators.
