Low-cost digital terminal adapters with Irdeto Universal Client allow MSOs to maintain security and control service

WASHINGTON, D.C. — NCTA — Irdeto (JSE: NPN), a leading expert in content and business model protection solutions and services, today announced the official launch of the Irdeto Universal Client DTA security solution for the North American cable industry. The solution is designed to give cable companies new, cost-effective choices for achieving a full digital cable transition and reducing their dependence on existing security and set-top box (STB) vendors.

Cable operators are increasingly seeking to reclaim analog bandwidth to offer more HD, VOD and broadband services, allowing them to more effectively compete with DTH platforms. DTA devices also allow cable operators to capture terrestrial-only viewers as customers and fully lock themselves into all televisions in a household. To unlock these benefits, MSOs require a low-cost DTA device that meets increasing consumer demands for digital quality and includes security sufficient to meet the requirements of content providers.

The Irdeto Universal Client is a software-based DTA security solution based on Irdeto’s 15 years of experience in securing the content and revenues of hundreds of digital pay TV operators worldwide. The Universal Client is more resistant to hacking, cloning and reverse engineering than any other software security solution because of its exclusive use of the latest Cloakware™ software protection technologies.

Irdeto is working with renowned silicon manufactures and has integrated its Universal Client technology on Broadcom’s highly-integrated BCM3545 DTA system-on-a-chip (SoC) solution. In addition, Irdeto is working with the world’s leading set-top box manufacturers to integrate the solution ready for market deployment.

“The combination of our proven digital TV content protection experience plus the newly acquired knowledge of software-protection leader Cloakware means we’re able to offer more innovative and effective solutions, particularly for these types of environments where price sensitivity is at its highest,” said Graham Kill, CEO of Irdeto. “The North American cable community stands to gain tremendous benefits from a full migration to digital, and Irdeto’s many years of experience in doing this for operators around the world means we can help them meet their goals more quickly, cost-effectively and flexibly.”
