Motorola IPTV set-tops enable Portugal Telecom to accelerate the delivery of rich media experiences

LISBON, Portugal – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced that it has delivered 150,000 IPTV set tops to Portugal Telecom (Lisbon: PTC; NYSE: PT) for its triple play service meo. At 31st of December of 2008, the operator had 312,000 customers for its meo service, and with the latest shipments of set tops, Motorola becomes the preferred supplier of this service.

Recognized by Portugal Telecom as a pioneer of IPTV, Motorola has been delivering its VIP1200E and VIP1216E set-tops which support both high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) video throughout a long term contract. The VIP1216E also incorporates a built-in hard disk drive for DVR functionality, allowing meo customers to plan, record, and store what they want to watch to suit their own schedule. In a recent study of the media consumption habits of the Millennial generation in Europe and Middle East, Motorola found that over 60 percent of respondents were interested in being able to organize their own program guide.

“The growing consumer appetite for personalized media experiences and rich media content such as HD video continues to drive demand for Motorola’s digital entertainment devices,” said Joe Cozzolino, senior vice president and general manager, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility EMEA and Asia Pacific. “This further extends our leadership in IPTV and we are pleased with Portugal Telecom’s decision to incorporate our IPTV set-tops into its portfolio of devices for its meo service. We look forward to continuing our close working relationship as Portugal Telecom’s business evolves and grows.”

With more video content available comes the demand for greater levels of choice, customization and control over the time and place in the consumer experience. Motorola’s IPTV devices, digital video recorders (DVRs), and video-on-demand (VOD) solutions are helping service providers meet these demands for customization, time-shifting and place-shifting. Motorola is the leading global supplier of IPTV and digital set-tops.
