SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — There are currently 124 million digital cable TV subscriber households around the world, which represents an increase of 27% over the past year, reports In-Stat in its latest cable TV market research. Digital cable TV subscribers are forecasted to more than double by 2013. Strong growth in cable modem services is complementing cable pay TV services, as cable modem broadband service revenue will grow to nearly $53 billion by 2013, up from $37 billion in 2009.

“Cable operators increasingly see themselves as full-service telecommunications service providers,” says Mike Paxton, In-Stat analyst. “Providing cable TV’s “triple play,” of video, data and telephony, is proving to be an increasingly important competitive capability.”

Recent research by In-Stat found the following:

  • The majority of new digital cable TV subscribers are in China, where the total number of digital cable households has risen by nearly 20 million over the past year.
  • Comcast has the most subscribers among cable modem service providers in North America, followed by Time Warner Cable. The remaining “Top 10” service providers consist of Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Charter Communications, Cox Communications, Mediacom Communications, Rogers Cable, Shaw Communications, and Videotron.
  • The UK currently has the most cable modem subscribers among European countries, followed by the Netherlands, Spain and Germany.
  • Mexico has the most digital cable TV subscribers among Latin American countries, with 1.25 million. Digital cable subscribers across the Latin America/Caribbean region are projected to nearly triple from 2008 to 2013.

Recent In-Stat research, The Worldwide Cable TV Market: Video and High-Speed Data Subscribers (#IN0904058MBS), overs the worldwide market for cable modem and cable TV video services.
