Orange shows prototype Atom-based set-top box

France Telecom (Paris & NYSE: FTE) has revealed a high definition set-top box based on an Atom processor from Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC). The ‘Orange Box’ was developed in co-operation with Samsung Electronics (Seoul: 005930).

The box includes a 160GB hard disk for personal video recording and time shifting, a Blu-ray player, and a broadband connection. A browser with Flash 10 support is included for viewing of on-line content. A new user interface supports widgets and allows for access to digital media stored on a home network.

Compatible with most digital networks (ADSL, DTT and satellite), the Orange Box comes with integrated Bluetooth and a remote control with an infra-red pointer and a Wii-like accelerometer for games.

The product is at the prototype stage, and has a possible introduction date of late 2010 or early 2011.
