AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — IBC 2013, Entropic Meeting Suite: Hall 13, G106/G107 — Entropic (Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home, today announced LG CNS, the leading IT services company in South Korea, has selected Entropic’s Verimatrix-certified, high-performance hybrid set-top box (STB) system-on-a-chip (SoC) to deliver a secure and powerful TV viewing experience.

A hybrid (Cable/IPTV) STB, the new LG CNS solution leverages Entropic’s most powerful STB SoC family, the EN757x/EN758x, which features a dual-core ARM® Cortex™-A9 processor with 5000 DMIPS and ecosystem support for the Google Android® operating system. LG CNS and Entropic have a long history of partnership and worked together on this new device to deliver a system solution that merged traditional broadcast content, video-on-demand and IP-based entertainment.

“We selected Entropic because they offered a high performance, low-power solution coupled with deep domain expertise in supporting the Android ecosystem,” said Deog-Joo Won, Vice President of Telecommunication and Media BU, LG CNS. “Further, as our hybrid solution requires bi-directional, IP-based network support, we needed an advanced security chipset that would protect the premium content of our Pay-TV operator customers.”

Enhanced Security with Verimatrix

To optimize the security architecture, Entropic embedded on its SoC hardware a robust, software-based content protection platform from Verimatrix, the specialist in securing and enhancing revenue for multi-network, multi-screen digital TV services around the globe. Using Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS™) and ViewRight® STB security solution, the LG CNS device offers a proven solution to protecting Pay-TV operator content.

“Although the rapid growth of two-way, IPTV networks has expanded the world of consumer entertainment and interactivity, it has also opened up a new world of potential programming theft and content piracy,” said Petr Peterka, chief technology officer, Verimatrix. “We worked closely with Entropic to enhance revenue security on their STB SoC and ensure LG CNS can offer a product that alleviates any security concerns.”

“Building on our relationship with LG CNS we understood their need for a competitive, advanced set-top box solution with added security capabilities,” said Roger Gregory, vice president, Marketing, Entropic. “We partnered with Verimatrix, a recognized security expert, to integrate their cardless conditional access technology into our system-on-a-chip solution to enable customers, like LG CNS, and Pay-TV operators’ content protection in the growing IPTV world.”

The STB is being demonstrated this week in Amsterdam at the IBC Exhibition, September 13-17, in Entropic’s Meeting Suite, Hall 13, G106/G107.
