Set-top box to cut energy consumption

AUSTRALIAN researchers at National ICT Australia (NICTA) are developing a consumer-friendly set-top box to reduce energy consumption by data centres.
The work is part of the European Commission’s 7th Framework Program for Research and Technological Development (FP7).
The project takes a novel approach to traditional data centres, through so-called “nano” data centres, which are deployed in boxes at the edge of the network (i.e. in home gateways, set-top-boxes, etc.) and accessed using a new peer-to-peer communication infrastructure.
