• Bluetooth for wireless connectivity to set-top box
• Investigating future convergence of mobile devices
SEPTEMBER 8, 2006 – For the first time, Pace Micro Technology plc (LSE:PIC), the leading independent developer of digital TV technologies for the global payTV industry, will be demonstrating how Bluetooth wireless connectivity can be used to relay information between a mobile device and set-top box, as part of the home network of the future.
The Pace demonstration will show how data can be transferred from a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone to a Pace personal video recorder (PVR), to be stored and viewed on the display as and when required.
This demonstration marks the beginning of a fully convergent future for mobile devices with entertainment systems in the home. Future applications using Bluetooth could include:
• VoIP - Bluetooth connects a mobile device wirelessly to the set-top box, which then uses the IP return channel to make the call
• Mobile phone peripherals - for example, screensavers, ring tones and games, which could be easily downloaded from an operator source directly to the mobile handset using Bluetooth, thereby generating a new income source for operators
• Intelligent remote control unit - using Bluetooth connectivity, the mobile device can be transformed into an EPG or entertainment controller for use with the set-top box or media server
Darren Fawcett, Chief Technologist - Wireless Systems at Pace Micro Technology commented: "Bluetooth is a cost-effective solution for operators wanting to offer a connection via a mobile phone. Demand for Bluetooth-enabled devices is also growing, with an estimated one in five mobile phones sold in 2005 using Bluetooth technology, making this technology a good choice for mass usage and implementation."
