SEPTEMBER 8, 2006 – Strategy & Technology (S&T), a leading specialist in the field of digital interactive TV, has today announced the launch of an MHEG-5 plug-in for MHP 1.1 receivers.
S&T’s plug-in software application enables MHP 1.1 receivers to receive and run MHEG-5 applications, allowing broadcasters to use the MHEG-5 standard in markets where MHP receivers are deployed. The software will be demonstrated on the S&T stand 1.210 throughout IBC.
Colin Prior, Director of International Sales at S&T commented, “MHEG is a field-proven middleware that is widely available in receiver devices at a much lower cost than MHP. The availability of this plug-in gives broadcasters currently using MHP, as well as those wanting to maintain an upgrade path the option of a two tier interactive service using MHEG for a ‘basic profile’ and MHP 1.1 for ‘enhanced profile’ applications.”
Originally developed and standardised by ISO in the mid-1990s as part of the DAVIC standardisation effort to support interactivity and navigation for video-on-demand services, MHEG-5 has achieved significant success on the UK’s Freeview DVB-T platform with over 12 million receivers deployed using the UK Profile.
S&T is also announcing its involvement with IMPALA (International MHEG Promotion Alliance) at IBC2006. IMPALA is a newly formed association of software manufacturers and supporters who are engaged with the use of the MHEG-5 interactive TV standard outside the UK. IBC2006 visitors are invited to call at the IMPALA stand 3.140 to find out more on how MHEG-5 technology can help broadcasters and receiver manufacturers with the deployment of interactive services in international markets.
