Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) launches IPTV
Monday, September 22nd, 2008Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) (Colombo:SLTL) has launched IPTV in Sri Lanka, operated by a recently created subsidiary SLT VisionCom. Visioncom has a target of reaching 7,000 customers by the end of the year and 100,000 customers in three years.
UTStarcom (Nasdaq: UTSI) is supplying its RollingStream® end-to-end Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) solution to SLT.
The service is available in the Greater Colombo area, Katunayake, Kurunegala, Kandy and Kalutara. The next phase will include Ratnapura and Down South.
IPTV set-up, which includes the set top box, is 9,950 rupees followed by 1,000 rupees a month.
At launch, the Visioncom “PEO TV” service has 14 international and 5 domestic channels including CNN, Al-Jazeera, BBC World and HBO. This is expected to be increased to 40 channels.
