The Smart TV home digital entertainment service Okko, formerly Play, dominates in paid sector of video-on-demand market in Russia, considerably outstripping its nearest competitor iTunes in the first half of 2014, according to market research on OTT-operators conducted by J’son & Partners Consulting.
This research shows Okko to be delivering outstanding results: its revenue in Russia almost twice exceeds revenue of a worldwide heavyweight player iTunes. Apple leads the world VOD market in electronic sell-through (EST), earning 65 percent movie sales revenue. Russia is the unique market where this global leader is considerably behind the competitor.
Okko has shown rapid growth: revenue of the service increased 4-fold in the first half of 2014 comparing with the same period of 2013 and reached 285 million Rubles. The total number of devices registered in Okko has already approached 5 million units.
The Smart TV platform has brought Okko more than 91% of the total revenue for the service, which is a unique result for transactional video-on-demand services.
The key success factor for Okko is keeping the main focus on the Smart TV platform that allows the service to grow fast and show the newest Hollywood movies in premium home theatre window in quality Full HD / 3D with Dolby Digital Plus sound on Smart TV.
