Reliance starts beta testing own Smart TV OS
Thursday, July 4th, 2024
According to The Economic Times, Reliance Industries has started beta testing the country’s first indigenously developed smart TV operating system (OS) ready for a possible launch on TVs by Diwali (November 1, 2024). The ‘Jio TV OS’ is Android-based and open source.
Reliance is collaborating with TV manufacturers in India on the beta testing, with plans to launch entry-level smart TVs under its BPL and Reconnect brands later this year, while licensing the OS to other Indian manufacturers.
Reliance does not intend to charge licensing fees for Jio TV OS. Instead the company will be able to bundle apps such as JioCinema with the OS, and generate revenue through advertising. Reliance could also package Jio TV OS televisions with its broadband products.
