PeerTV cracks high efficiency video coding for OTT systems

PeerTV, the TV over the internet (OTT) technology solutions provider, today announced that it has successfully trialled its next generation set top box using H265 HEVC or High Efficiency Video Coding to deliver TV over the internet. The new technology will mean content can be streamed via its set top box using 50% of the bandwidth previously required for H264 technology. Significant enhancements to transmission quality have also been reported.

At the same time, PeerTV announced several other important upgrades to its Android based technology, which now uses quad core processors, delivering more power for apps and games.

Commenting on the successful deployment of the new technology, PeerTV CEO Avi Vermus said, “Our next generation OTT TV over the internet set top box takes us to what we believe to be clear market leading position within the OTT market – we can now offer OTT providers a technology solution using Android apps, quad core technology for power and H265 compression, which delivers far superior picture and sound quality, whilst using around half the bandwidth previously needed. Clearly, this opens up the market considerably and allows us to target countries where OTT TV may not yet have been considered viable, as these areas may not yet have a well-developed fast internet infrastructure.”

Recognising the increasing convergence between internet, TV and games, the new PeerTV set top box also offers significant enhancements to gamers and surfers. A games adapter has been launched allowing Android games that were originally designed for touch screen to be played with a standard remote control or external joystick/gamepad.

Further software upgrades have been made in the area of advanced apps and TV integration, enabling seamless delivery of TV, whilst gaming or running apps such as Facebook, browsers and other web pages.

PeerTV recently announced significant contracts to supply its set top box to OTT providers servicing the US, Russian, Polish and Irish markets, both domestically and abroad.

PeerTV was one of the first companies in the market to launch an Android based OTT set top box bringing together the advantages of the Android operating system, apps and a quick and smooth user experience to enable TV or web viewing via a single unit. The PeerTV package has been carefully designed to meet the unique needs of the OTT marketplace, delivering a flexible platform that can be customised both by the end user and by corporate buyers of the system. PeerTV’s technology is expected to be bought by ISPs, ethnic TV service providers, content providers, cable operators, mobile operators, the hospitality sector, hospitals and academic institutions.
