Coverage Expanded to Include the Rapidly Growing European DVB-T TV Market

AUSTIN, TEXAS — DisplaySearch, the worldwide leader in display market research and consulting, has released the Q4’06 Quarterly TV Electronics Report. The latest report introduces coverage of the fast growing DVB-T TV market in Europe. In Q3’06, video processor, MPEG video processor and deinterlacer/scaler unit growth was 43% Q/Q, and revenues grew 46% Q/Q. 63% of all units shipped were video processors, but the deinterlacer/scaler market continues to decline. The overall 2006 market forecast is $1.2B, up 37% Y/Y from 2005. MPEG2 based video processors had the largest Q/Q unit and revenue growth.

The Quarterly TV Electronics Report provides actual shipments and forecasts of revenues, units, and average selling prices (ASPs) for video processors, deinterlacer/scaler, and MPEG2-based HD video processors. Detailed analysis and trends are also included in the report.
Q3’06 highlights include

  • Total revenue in Q3’06 grew to $402M with merchant IC providers included in 82% of all digital TVs. Continued revenue growth is expected through 2007 in the IC market.
  • IC suppliers are turning their attention to the fast growing Europe market for DVB-T. The DVB-T TV market is expected to be 5.8M units in 2006 and rise to 22.4M units by 2010 (40% CAGR). STMicroelectronics led the Q3’06 IC market with stand-alone MPEG2 processors shipping into add-on modules for DVB-T TVs.
  • AMD led the MPEG2 video processor market with over 2M units shipped in Q3’06. Zoran was a distant second with over 1M units shipped.

As shown in Table 1 below, Trident leads the IC supplier market with 27.9% share, followed closely by Genesis Microchip. ATI saw the fastest growth of the top five IC suppliers with 45% Q/Q growth.

Table 1: Q3’06 Top Five TV Set Supplier Market Share

Rank IC Supplier Q3’06 Share Q/Q Growth
1 Trident 27.9% 30%
2 Genesis 23.3% 35%
3 Micronas 14.3% 37%
4 ATI 11.6% 45%
5 Renesas 9.0% 16%

According to Henry Choy, Vice President of Display Electronics at DisplaySearch, “Revenue for TV IC manufacturers exceeded expectations because TV manufacturers pulled in orders to prepare for the year-end ramp. Revenue and units will drop from Q3’06 to Q4’06 due to the aggressive pull-in by the TV manufacturers and normal seasonal effects. The overall outlook for 2007 is still very positive with the shift towards flat panel TVs from CRTs.”

The Quarterly TV Electronics Report is delivered in PowerPoint format. It shows market share of IC suppliers, design wins, schematics, shipments and forecasts for the TV electronics market. Financial analysts benefit from knowing potential upside for each IC company covered in the report. IC companies and brands benefit from knowledge of competitors’ relationships with IC suppliers.
