OpenTV Recommends Seagate for External Storage; Advanced PVR Functionalities on Display

SAN FRANCISCO– IBC 2009 — OpenTV Corp. (NASDAQ:OPTV), a leading software and technology provider of advanced digital television solutions, today announced it will be showcasing an external PVR storage solution in collaboration with Seagate Technology (NASDAQ:STX), the world leader of hard disk drives and storage solutions, at IBC 2009, Hall 1 Stand C81, September 11-15, 2009 in Amsterdam. Powered by the latest release of OpenTV Core2 middleware, the solution pairs OpenTV’s PVR technology with Seagate’s Showcase® storage expander, which OpenTV recommends as a preferred external storage device, The demonstration will show how external storage not only allows PVR viewers to significantly expand their program recording capacity – often limited to only 20 hours of HD content – but also how it enables operators to provide their subscribers with the option to remotely activate PVR functionality on their non-PVR equipped set-top box.

“Both OpenTV and Seagate have been working closely to bring best of breed PVR technologies to the market,” said Joel Zdepski, Senior Vice President and General Manager Middleware, OpenTV. “External storage is an important part of an operator’s offering as they seek to enhance their services, and we’re confident that, in collaborating with Seagate on this solution, we’re recommending the most stable and reliable external storage to our customers. Seagate’s drives work seamlessly with PVR functionality and are the perfect complement to our robust middleware technology.”

“Seagate drives are already recognized by PVR consumer electronics manufacturers around the world for their performance and reliability,” said Joan Motsinger, Vice President, Product Line Management at Seagate. “With OpenTV’s recommendation of our Showcase drive, we’re excited to expand the potential market of consumers who can enjoy greater capacities for recording and saving more of the entertainment they love.”

The Seagate Showcase PVR storage expander features:

  • A low power 5900 RPM Pipeline HD internal hard drive designed specifically to meet the HD video demands of today’s digital recording;
  • An ultra quiet fan to enable use in any room in the house without distraction; and
  • Optimized firmware for smooth streaming of video content;
  • Available in capacities up to 1TB, which equates to 200 hours of HD content.

OpenTV’s Core2 middleware offering supports external PVR storage devices over both USB and eSATA. Highlights of OpenTV’s External Storage Solution will be on display at IBC 2009, Hall 1 Stand C81, Sept. 11-15, 2009. Follow OpenTV on Twitter @opentv_at_ibc.
