The company targets mainstream retail market with a small form-factor, affordable STB

LONDON, UK — Oregan Networks, the leading developer of media browsing technologies for television, has announced imminent launch of the Onyx STB manufactured by Korea-based Consumer Electronics brand Digital Streams. The new device offers a simple way for consumers to stream UK’s popular Internet video services and music, as well as accessing photo sharing and social networking sites on their televisions.

To offer consumers the maximum freedom of choice, the media player allows access to multiple branded content outlets via a slick and animated user interface. These include catch-up TV, leading movie rental services and User Generated Content, such as YouTube, BBC iPlayer in HD and various video podcasts. Other widget based apps include Facebook, Twitter, Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food, BBC News and BBC Sports and Accedo FunSpot games. The device provides access to millions of videos at any given time, with much of the content free of charge, and blockbuster movies available for instant streaming via subscription or pay-per-view purchase models.

The Onyx global content search capability is activated through a single click of the remote control, and includes options for context-sensitive searching of video on the Internet, as well as on DLNA compliant home network devices.

The Onyx-powered STB from Digital Streams features an ultra-compact design, requiring minimal space within the home entertainment system.

Under the hood

The media player has built-in HTML and Adobe Flash content browsing capability that allows it to connect to and render Over-the-Top (OTT) entertainment channels and widgets. Adaptive Bitrate Streaming capability ensures an uninterrupted streaming experience in bandwidth-constrained conditions and during peak network usage times.

The device has been engineered to address the concerns of consumers regarding being restricted to a single service offering, or technology becoming dated and obsolete. The Onyx live upgrade service will offer regular automated updates, delivering new apps and services.

Milya Timergaleyeva, Oregan’s VP Market Strategy said: ‘We are pleased to announce our new movie and catch-up TV streaming STB, designed specifically for UK audiences, who are amongst the most discerning in Europe, due to the wealth of free-to-air content and catch-up TV services available. With Onyx, we offer a raft of the most compelling web services for consumers that seek a wider range of viewing options.’

Pricing and availability

Onyx STBs are expected be available through leading high street retailers for the Christmas market, and from online stores starting from October 2010, priced below £ 90 UKP.
