Products Powered by MIPS Technologies get Top Honors

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — MIPS Technologies, Inc., (NasdaqGS: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard architectures, processor cores and analog IP for digital consumer, home networking, wireless, communications and business applications, today announced that a broad array of the world’s leading consumer electronics companies debuted and demonstrated design innovations based on the industry-leading MIPS® architecture at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

“The most innovative consumer products are launched each year at CES, and this year was no exception,” said Jack Browne, vice president of marketing at MIPS Technologies. “The MIPS architecture and cores were prolific throughout CES, from high-end home theater products to the latest in home networking. MIPS-Based™ products generated tremendous buzz at the show, and several won coveted CES Innovation Awards.”

Top MIPS-Based Highlights

Philips Consumer Electronics was honored with the coveted “Best in Show” in the annual “CNET Best of CES” awards for its 42″ 1080p LCD HDTV with advanced power saving technologies.

Winning a CES “Best of Innovations 2008” award was Sling Media’s SlingCatcher™, a set-top box (STB) that lets users “sling” video content from one TV to another and from a PC or laptop to a TV. The SlingCatcher leverages NXP Semiconductors’ STB810 IP solution, based on the Philips Nexperia PNX8550 home entertainment engine, which combines a MIPS32® application processor with two powerful DSPs for advanced AV processing.

VUDU Inc.’s VUDUBX100 was also honored with an “Innovations 2008” award. The company launched the VUDU XL, a new high-end version of its already successful VUDU box for integration into high-end home theaters. The VUDU XL has one terabyte of storage to hold 500 movies and uses a peer-to-peer scheme to download movies.

Additionally, Polaroid Consumer Electronics’ next generation HDTV STB was honored with an “Innovations 2008” award. Its new Freescape™ Digital Media Exchange, which incorporates a MIPS-based chip from Sigma Designs, is designed to capture and manage personal media including pictures, camcorder video, music, and TV shows.

Westell Technologies’ new UltraLine™ Series3 was another “Innovations 2008” award honoree. The UltraLine Series 3 Digital Home Controller delivers a comprehensive set of broadband services-including IPTV, media sharing, home security, remote access and energy management-to networked devices throughout the home.

Additional MIPS-Based Show Highlights

AMD

AMD (NYSE: AMD) announced a new family of AMD Xilleon™ panel processors designed to provide unrivaled visual quality in liquid crystal display (LCD) digital TVs. The technology was chosen by Samsung for its patented 120Hz Motion Compensated Frame Interpolation (McFi™) solution. Mitsubishi’s MZW series 120Hz LCD TVs are based on Samsung’s McFi solution and the AMD Xilleon panel processor.

Broadcom Corporation

Broadcom made several announcements at CES, including that the company is collaborating with Microsoft to enable Microsoft Mediaroom™ IPTV client software to operate on next-generation STBs utilizing the Broadcom® BCM7405 System-on-a-Chip (SoC). The BCM7405 combines a fast 1000-DMIPS MIPS32 CPU for high-speed graphics processing. Broadcom also announced two SoC solutions for direct broadcast satellite STBs; the BCM7335, a high-definition dual channel PVR satellite which operates on a dual-threaded MIPS core running at 450 MHz resulting in over 950 DMIPS in performance, as well as the BCM7325 a low cost single tuner satellite SoC. Broadcom’s new BCM7440 SoC, provided with a turnkey Blu-ray Disc® and HD DVD reference design, leverages a multi-core MIPS architecture.

Broadcom also announced that its dual-band 802.11n solutions deliver the first real Wi-Fi multimedia experience by boosting the performance and range of Wi-Fi products. Routers with Broadcom’s Gigabit Ethernet processor, the BCM4705, provide ample bandwidth for several HD video streams, plus voice over IP (VoIP) calls. The company also demonstrated a DTV design platform that enables connection to the web and home network, allowing consumers to access personal videos, photos and music from their televisions.

Cisco

Cisco® introduced the latest additions to its 8500HDC Digital Video Recorder (DVR) Set-Top Series. The new 8500HDC DVR models offer a broader set of features and technical innovations to enable delivery of next-generation visual networking experiences, including sharing Internet services and content across multiple device platforms and the portability of personal photos and video content.

Entropic Communications

Entropic Communications announced it is partnering with D-Link to provide the industry’s first home networking MoCA 1.0 compliant bridge for consumers, online gamers and digital home entertainment enthusiasts. D-Link’s DXN-220 incorporates Entropic’s EN2210 c.LINK chip set, which enables a complete coaxial networking solution for the distribution of multiple streams of HD video, digital, voice, broadband data and other digital content.

Entropic also joined with Oxford Semiconductor to demonstrate a HANA (High Definition Audio Video Network Alliance) over MoCA (Multimedia Over Coax Alliance) entertainment network. This was the first demonstration leveraging a MoCA PHY in HANA-enabled devices. The two companies additionally showcased combined technologies that create a MoCA-enabled network attached storage device. Entropic recently announced it has surpassed the milestone of 10 million shipments of its MIPS-Based c.LINK chipsets for connected home entertainment.

RMI Corporation

RMI launched the industry’s fastest and most power-optimized consumer processor for multi-function portable media players, enabling media playback, mobile TV reception, GPS navigation, Internet browsing and running Windows CE. The new MIPS-Based RMI Alchemy™ Au1250 Media Processor brings 700MHz performance at remarkably low power. RMI also announced with BSQUARE that the companies are collaborating to support Adobe Flash Lite 3.0 on the Au1250 Media Processor. RMI announced that multiple customers selected the new Media Processor, including:

  • COWON Systems, a global leader in digital multimedia solutions, for its Q5w PMP
  • Digital Cube, the largest provider of full-featured portable media solutions, for its latest offerings – the iStation U43 and the iStation T7 multi-function PMPs
  • Geotel, a worldwide navigation leader, for its XROAD MO1000 navigation-based powerful multi-function PMP
  • Hyundai Autonet (HD Autonet), the largest automotive electronics company in Korea, for its Personal Navigation Device – the Broadzone BZN-600
  • Reigncom (iRiver), a leader in global digital device markets, for its recently announced iRiver P10 PMP with touch screen
  • Yukyung (Viliv), for its latest mobile multimedia devices – the X5 and the X70 Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) supporting HSDPA, WiFi and Bluetooth™ wireless connectivity on top of PMP, mobile TV, GPS navigation, dictionary and Internet browsing with Adobe Flash on a touch screen-based Windows CE system

Sigma Designs

Sigma Designs demonstrated several technologies that leverage MIPS cores, including its next generation SoC media processor technology, Blu-ray player reference design, IPTV STB with the latest Microsoft Mediaroom IPTV platform, DOCSIS 3 and OCAP middleware working with Sigma’s SMP8634 SoC for HDTVs incorporating digital cable, a DTV reference design showing ATSC and PVR middleware, VXP image processing demonstrations, and the latest Microsoft Media Center extender (MCX) platform based on Sigma’s SMP8634 SoC.

Several leading consumer electronics companies also demonstrated products that leverage MIPS-Based chips from Sigma Designs. These include Tatung’s STB and multimedia server products, TV Guide’s new consumer PVR product and Gracenote’s integrated media player STB for DLNA-compliant playback and Gracenote MusicID, Cover Art, Playlist, and other advanced technologies.

SRS Labs

SRS Labs, Inc. announced that SRS WOW HD audio enhancement technology is now available for the RMI Alchemy™ family of multimedia applications processors, and that Digital Cube is its first public licensee. Initially enabled through a relationship with MIPS Technologies, the WOW HD solution is applicable for multimedia devices supporting music and video, GPS-based navigation, digital photo frames and mobile TV.

Teledex

Teledex selected Broadcom’s voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology for three of its newest IP phones. The Teledex IP phones leverage Broadcom’s BCM1103 VoIP processor that combines superior voice services with rich, graphical content to meet the needs of hotel environments.

Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc (TAEC)

Toshiba announced the latest addition to its popular line of SoC ICs for mass-market ATSC high-definition LCD TVs, the TC90413XBG. The TC90413XBG IC incorporates a 64-bit 333 MHz MIPS processor. It is available as part of TAEC’s new Customizable Universal DTV Platform (CUDP) for DTV applications.

Toshiba also announced that the company’s TX4961 64-bit automotive graphics controller is now compatible with the QNX® Neutrino® real-time operating system (RTOS). The TX4961 integrates a MIPS CPU with a display controller and hardware graphics accelerators in a single SoC IC.

Zoran Corporation

Zoran Corporation demonstrated its new HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc, HDTV, digital camera and connected technologies. These included the SupraHD® high definition television designs and STB products, as well as new digital camera design platforms and new models from Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Samsung, Sony and others using the COACH digital camera processor. Zoran also demonstrated the new VaddisHD™ High Definition Multimedia Processor platforms supporting both Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD formats, and new combo products based on Zoran’s Activa® 200 family of processors.
