WISI America Powers New ABR Multiscreen Service for Cable Bahamas

VANCOUVER, Canada — Cable Bahamas (DBA Rev), a leading triple play provider for the Bahamian population, chose WISI America, a global leader in carrier-grade video delivery solutions, to power its new on-premise Adaptive Bitrate (ABR) video service. By launching this new multiscreen offering with WISI, Cable Bahamas was able to triple their DOCSIS speeds, increase video quality and reduce operating expenses across the board.

Cable Bahamas, based in Nassau, has provided communication and entertainment services for Bahamians for almost three decades. Before partnering with WISI America, Cable Bahamas faced video platform stability issues and experienced spectrum problems caused by a multiple-vendor solution. Working with WISI America solved that problem.

WISI America is the North American headquarters of WISI, a global leader in video reception and distribution technology spanning 100 years.

“We chose a WISI ABR solution because it allows us to tailor our service to whatever needs our customers have, while creating a fine balance between DOCSIS speed and video quality,” said Andre Johnson, Broadcast IP Video Engineer for Cable Bahamas.

WISI transcodes ABR streams via the Inca IP Video Platform. The Inca is a high-density IP processing platform that specializes in bridging the gap between legacy and new video technologies, including next-gen HEVC and ABR transcode applications. Operators can easily consolidate multiple functions and eliminate racks of legacy headend equipment with one sophisticated platform.

“The return on investment has been pretty great. We’ve greatly reduced power usage and lowered cooling costs by over 8,000 watts or about $13,000 a year. In the summer alone, that right there sold itself. We’ve also consolidated our entire core video network from three and a half racks to just half a rack, which is a major savings in rack space,” said Johnson.

VidiOS™, WISI’s award-winning user interface for the Inca platform, is truly unique to the market. The management system provides a user-friendly experience to analyze and monitor complex video processing.

“The results are increased stability of our IP video network, with better use and efficiency on our DOCSIS spectrum. We have more than tripled our speeds as they were before,” said Johnson.

With WISI’s solution, operators reduce cooling costs, power consumption, and consolidate rack space while they gain significant operational efficiencies with integrated analytics and centralized monitoring.

“Our troubleshooting time has greatly reduced. We can now keep our team focused and more efficient regarding solving issues and trying to increase profitability and reduce expenses. So, we’ve cut our operating expenses across the board,” said Johnson.
