New HD IP set-top box technology from NXP offers industry leading support for Windows Embedded CE 6.0 to ease the development of devices for a stronger IPTV market

LAS VEGAS — At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) today, NXP Semiconductors announced the industry’s first high-definition (HD) IP set-top box (STB) platform with support for Microsoft Windows Embedded CE 6.0, which will be demonstrated during CES at the Microsoft booth (#7144) and the NXP demo suite at the Wynn Resort. The shared commitment to the IPTV and IP-STB markets by NXP and Microsoft Corp. will bolster the adoption of IPTV globally by offering designers the freedom to develop a more flexible solution and consumers the highest-quality, interactive IPTV experience.

“We’re excited NXP has chosen to take advantage of the newly released Windows Embedded CE version 6.0 for its new IP set-top box platform,” said Ilya Bukshteyn, director, Windows Embedded Marketing, Mobile and Embedded Devices Division, Microsoft Corp. “With the latest Windows Embedded CE software environment, the new NXP IP set-top box platform will help manufacturers to build set-top boxes that enable consumers to interact with TV in a completely new way by unifying all types of entertainment and Internet media into a simple, user-driven experience.”

“The key to driving global adoption of IPTV is the IP-enabled set-top box, which acts as the gate to unlimited content between the outside world and the home,” said Giel Rutten, senior vice president and general manager, Home business unit, NXP Semiconductors. “By supporting Windows Embedded CE 6.0 in our newest IP set-top box platform, NXP is meeting designers’ demands for access to the latest software environment to easily design a flexible solution and bring it to market in a short amount of time.”

NXP Semiconductors is powering the revolution in the TV viewing experience by not only improving picture quality, but also enabling a variety of audio, video, data and images to be available anytime, anywhere throughout the home and on-the-move. The TV will soon be the window to a world of new content, and NXP is unique in supporting these developments with a full range of semiconductor components, system solutions and connected systems based on industry standards.
