In an update to its Android portfolio, Google has announced its Nexus Player, the first device running Android TV. Nexus Player, a collaboration with Asus, is a streaming media player for movies, music and videos. It is also a gaming device. With the Nexus Player users can play Android games on a TV with a gamepad, then keep playing on a phone whilst on the road.

The Nexus Player is Google Cast Ready so can be used to ‘cast’ entertainment from almost any Chromebook or Android or iOS phone or tablet to the TV.

Apps available include Netflix and Hulu Plus as well as Google’s own Google Play store.

The device connects to the TV via HDMI and is 802.11ac-capable for wireless connectivity. The Player is powered by a 1.8GHz Quad Core, IntelĀ® Atom™ processor.

The Nexus Player will be available for pre-order in the U.S. on October 17.
