Dutch digital TV market growth slows

HOUTEN, The Netherlands — The number of digital TV connections in the Netherlands grew by 3.4 percent or 149,300 net additions during the third quarter to 4.56 million on 30 September 2009. Growth in digital helped offset the decrease in analogue TV connections, with the total number of Dutch TV connections up by 0.1 percent to 7.96 million on 30 September 2009, according to Telecompaper’s Dutch Digital Television Q3 2009 report. The share of digital TV on the entire TV market grew to 57.3 percent.

“For the fourth quarter of 2009, we expect growth of around 5 percent for the digital TV market,” said Telecompaper Senior Analyst and report author Kamiel Albrecht, “The growth will continue in 2010 at a slower pace of between 4 and 4.5 percent per quarter as the digital penetration is almost 60%.”

On the digital TV market, cable’s market share grew by 0.6 percentage points during the quarter to 52.6 percent. Satellite saw its digital TV market share drop by 1.2 percent to 22.1 percent and digital terrestrial TV’s digital TV share grew to 19.1 percent. Ziggo is the largest digital TV provider with 31.8 percent market share, followed by KPN with 20.7 percent, Canal Digitaal with 18.5 percent, and UPC with 15.6 percent.
