Sweden consults on terrestrial HDTV and DVB-T2

Friday, January 29th, 2010

The Swedish Radio and TV Authority (Radio- och TV-verket – RTVV) has published a draft strategy for the development of broadcasting on its terrestrial network.

The proposal is published today to allow interested parties to submit comments before a final version is published.

The positions of the Swedish Radio and TV Authority are:

  • High definition television (hd-tv) is a service that should be offered in terrestrial television. Hd-tv should have a pronounced higher image quality than standard definition television (sd-tv).
  • The broadcasting technology DVB-T2 is to be introduced in the terrestrial network. An introduction can start when spectrum corresponding to at least a whole multiplex is available.
  • The gradual transition to a more efficient compression technology, MPEG4, shall continue. The Swedish Radio and TV Authority will through licence conditions make the usage of MPEG mandatory for all licences issued from this point.

The deadline for comments is February 19th, with the final strategy scheduled for March.
