Antenna Hungária MinDig TV DTT users reach 100,000Tuesday, August 24th, 2010
A massive, more than fivefold growth was recorded in the number of DVB-T MPEG-4 compatible receivers sold during the first half of 2010 compared with the same period of last year, resulting that 8% of the Hungarian households has had already a DVB-T ready receiver at home. Simultaneously the actual usage of the MinDig TV service has reached a subsequent milestone: there are more than 100,000 households using the service, i.e. more than 12% of the total number of terrestrial households.
This growth was driven by the following factors: significant network expansion as of the end of last year, the growth of the service awareness based on the MinDig TV communication campaigns, the successful launch of the MinDig TV Extra service at the end of May, the very popular free-to-air reception possibility of the Football World Cup in HD-quality, the continuous expansion in the choice of the MinDig TV stickered devices and the further decreasing receiver prices.
The conversion process to the MinDig TV service is also boosted by the distribution of flat-screen TVs, as today we can hardly find LCD or plasma TV-set marketed in Hungary without a DVB-T MPEG-4 tuner, necessary for the reception of the MinDig TV service. Hereby for those viewers, upgrading their old TV-sets to LCD or plasma TV-sets equipped with a DVB-T MPEG-4 tuner, there is no need to buy a separate set-top-box for the usage of the MinDig TV service. Moreover, contrary to the cable platform, DVB-T uniquely ensures the freedom of choice for the viewer between the free-to-air and the pay-tv channels not only now, but after the analogue switch-off also.
Antenna Hungária uses the monthly sales statistics of GfK Hungária Kft. for the compilation of its monthly research. According to the very recent sales figures as of end of June, 8% of the Hungarian households had DVB-T MPEG-4 receiver (set-top-box, integrated TV set, PCI card or USB stick) at home. The actual usage of the MinDig TV service has reached a subsequent milestone, according to the estimation of BellResearch market research company, MinDig TV service is being used by more than 100,000 households, representing more than 12% of the total number of terrestrial households. The awareness of the digital terrestrial television service grew further also, two third of the Hungarian households have heard about MinDig TV already.
“We made important steps in the digital switchover process in the past months. With the availability of the Football World Cup in HD-quality without a subscription fee and with the launch of our MinDig TV Extra service the awareness and the popularity of the DVB-T platform grew continuously. We are very satisfied that the viewers welcomed favorably the launch of the MinDig TV Extra service, thousands of them subscribed for this additional service within a couple of weeks. There are already 17 television channels – from these 3 in HD quality – and 4 radio channels are available on the DVB-T platform, providing a real alternative vis-á-vis the other multi-channel television services. We would like to extend the number of free-to-air and pay-tv channels in the near future, and with the significant expansion of the digital terrestrial television network, MinDig TV and MinDig TV Extra services will be available for 95% of the population by the end of this year, both in the capital and at the smallest settlements” – emphasized Jean-Francois Fenech, Chief Executive Officer of Antenna Hungária.
