SAN DIEGO — Sorenson Media today announced that Comtrend Corporation, a global provider of advanced network products, has licensed the Sorenson Spark video decoder for inclusion in the company’s new line of set top boxes for Swiss Telecom. Sorenson Spark will enable the set top boxes to play the widest selection of videos available on the Internet.
Sorenson Spark is the industry’s most ubiquitous video codec and was the first codec used in Macromedia Flash, now Adobe Flash. The decoder exclusively enables the playback of hundreds of millions of videos on the Internet, including those on YouTube, the single largest online video destination today.
Comtrend designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of DSL-based network and communications solutions and will incorporate the Sorenson Spark video decoder into set top boxes for Swiss Telecom that deliver broadband TV, Video on Demand (VoD), Internet and streaming of video and data services over IP networks.
“With this new line of set top boxes, we aim to give our consumers the best possible features–which includes complete access to the widest array of Internet video,” said Robert Yao, vice president of Comtrend. “With Sorenson Spark, we can provide our users with Internet video that is not available through any other video codec.”
“True to its name, Comtrend is a leader in communications trends and provides an impressive range of networking equipment,” said Douglas Cebik, director of business development for Sorenson Media. “We are thrilled to join them in leading communications trends by providing Comtrend and Swiss Telecom customers our industry-leading video encoding solutions, allowing their products to stream the most extensive range of Internet video.”
