Multi-year pay TV strategy will boost TV penetration in Indonesia

INDONESIA — Irdeto (JSE: NPN), a global software security and media technology company, together with Indonesia’s leading Direct-to-Home (DTH) broadcast operator TelkomVision, a part of Telkom Group, today announced a deal involving TelkomVision’s use of Irdeto Conditional Access System (CAS) to significantly increase its market size and grow its subscriber base. Irdeto will provide TelkomVision with 500,000 smart cards this year.

Indonesia, with more than 245 million people and the third largest Asian market next to China and India, has 59% television penetration as of 2010. Pay TV penetration, currently at 3%, is expected to grow up to 8% by 2015, according to Pyramid Research.

“TelkomVision increased its revenue by almost 60% compared to last year and demonstrated significant growth of sales share as we keep improving in most aspects of the business. Our strategic collaboration with other Telkom Group companies enabled us to bundle products with Speedy, Flexi and Telkomsel, thus boosting our pay TV offering. TelkomVision continues to innovate products that cater to consumers’ increasing demand for a newer and wider variety of television content. Our strong partnership with Irdeto helps us to accelerate our product innovation, grow our subscriber base and make us the preferred choice for consumers,” said Pak Elvizar KH, President Director of TelkomVision.

“Irdeto is committed to helping TelkomVision realize its long-term goals by delivering the most secure and renewable conditional access solution on the market today. We have invested significantly to co-develop a solid strategy to ensure that both Irdeto and Telkomvision will succeed in the Indonesian market,” said Graham Kill, CEO, Irdeto.

Irdeto’s premium smart cards allow television broadcasters and content distributors to be able to freely experiment with new services, different payment options and device support without compromising their digital assets. At present, 21 customers in Southeast Asia are protecting their premium content using Irdeto’s security solutions. The latest deal with TelkomVision complements Irdeto’s position as the market share leader in overall digital subscriber volumes in the region.
