Co-Inventor of GB20600-2006 Standard Provides Semiconductor ICs for Fixed and Mobile Digital TV in China

FREMONT, Calif. — Legend Silicon Corporation, a leading technology company delivering semiconductor solutions for terrestrial digital TV (DTV), today announced that it has entered the global market for digital television with commercially deployed silicon solutions for fixed and mobile digital TV in China. The company is a co-inventor of the innovative technology that is at the core of the China Digital Television Terrestrial Broadcasting (DTTB) System Standard (GB20600-2006), and was a driving force in establishing the standard.

“Eight years of research, chip development and close work with the China standards body has paid off,” said Dr. Lin Yang, co-founder, chairman of the board and chief technology officer of Legend Silicon. “We have collaborated with broadcasters, broadcast equipment makers and consumer electronics manufacturers to ensure a smooth migration to digital television in advance of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Not only does our advanced technology meet the needs of terrestrial solutions, like televisions and set-top boxes (STBs), it also provides solutions for bringing digital broadcast television content to mobile devices.”

Legend Silicon’s products are designed for digital terrestrial reception of high definition and standard definition television, as well as other multimedia-based services. The company has secured design wins with nearly every major TV and set-top-box manufacturer in the world and its products are being designed into a variety of mobile devices. Legend Silicon’s product portfolio includes:

Mobile Applications

  • LGS-8GA6 — a highly integrated single chip demodulator fully compliant with the GB20600-2006 standard. It integrates Legend Silicon’s demodulator, Analog Devices, Inc.’s silicon tuner, and memory for the time de-interleaver in a System-In-Package (SIP). The LGS-8GA6 is targeted for mobile devices such as mobile phones and portable media players that have tight space-constrained and low-power requirements.
  • LGS-8GS6 — a highly integrated single chip demodulator fully compliant with the GB20600-2006 standard. It integrates Legend Silicon’s demodulator, Sharp Corporation’s silicon tuner, and memory for the time de-interleaver in a SIP. The LGS-8GS6 is targeted for mobile devices that have stringent low-power and space-constrained requirements.

Portable Applications

  • LGS-8GL5 — a single chip demodulator fully compliant with the GB20600-2006 standard. It features an integrated analog-to-digital converter (ADC), fully integrated memory for the time de-interleaver and is available in a 144 ball-grid-array (BGA). The LGS-8GL5 can be used with low power, small footprint silicon tuners in portable applications.

Fixed Applications

  • LGS-8G42 — a GB20600-2006-compliant single chip demodulator. This low power chip features an integrated ADC and is targeted for iDTV and STB applications.
  • LGS-8922 — a single chip DMB-TH demodulator. The LGS-8922 is designed as a cost-effective solution for STBs and automobile receivers in markets such as Hong Kong where DMB-TH meets the broadcasting requirements. DMB-TH is a subset of the GB20600-2006 standard.

“With about 380 million households, China is a huge market for televisions. Further expanding the potential market, the notion of what constitutes a television set is changing as TV receivers are being built into PCs, cell phones, cars, and other systems,” said Joseph Byrne, a senior analyst at The Linley Group and author of A Guide to Mobile TV Chips. “GB20600-2006 is one of the few standards in the world that comprehends both fixed and mobile applications, and Legend Silicon is the leading vendor providing solutions for both types of application.”
