Operators and integrators can create their own customizations building on a rich and field proven Set Top Box platform
MILAN — Pirelli Broadband Solutions, the broadband access company within the Pirelli Group, today announced the creation of OpenSet™, a complete hardware and software platform of Set Top Boxes for IPTV applications, with an associated SDK package that allows third parties to access Pirelli’s state-of-the-art embedded middleware for service customizations.
OpenSet™ will be showcased at the IPTV World Forum Exhibition in London (12-14 March).
With the OpenSet™ platform, operators, service providers and system integrators – whether in the Telco or verticals IPTV market – can pick the Set Top Box model that best suits them from Pirelli’s portfolio, and customize it for their offerings, building on rich software and hardware features already field proven in sophisticated Tier-1 IPTV commercial deployments. The associated SDK package, provides integrators with well documented APIs and with Pirelli’s technical support to fully exploit the platform’s hardware and software capabilities and integrate them with the IPTV middleware of choice.
The Pirelli’s Set Top Box portfolio associated to OpenSet™ comprises low-, mid- and high-end tier models all supporting H.264 HDTV decoding and TR-069 manageability, with equipage variants that comprise, among others, internal hard disk for PVR, hybrid Digital Terrestrial Television support, TV Internet browsing, multi-room support, media sharing capabilities, integrated wireless connectivity.
While fully interoperable in multi-vendor bundles, the OpenSet™ platform gives integrators and operators the opportunity to also access the specialized Pirelli portfolio for triple play applications, through which they can create turn-key service bundles that address the user experience issues related to IPTV deployments: the DEX connectivity extenders based on power-line and wireless technology solve the problems of self-installation and no-new-wires connectivity; the Multiplay broadband access gateways, available for xDSL and FTTH networks, bring sophisticated quality of service and performance monitoring capabilities; the PMP TR-069 remote management platform provides a carrier-grade tool for automatic provisioning, service assurance and mass firmware upgrades of all the devices in the bundle.
“OpenSet™ leverages on our experience in integrating the Set Top Box with different industry leading IPTV middlwares for Tier 1 services. Based on this experience, we have created an embedded software platform with an API-based development environment which allows to re-use the state-of-the-art and field proven capabilities of our products in a simplified way” said Francesco Schiavinato, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing for Pirelli Broadband Solutions. “The bottom line for providers and integrators will be the possibility to significantly reduce the cost and time-to-market traditionally associated to the customization and upgrade of IPTV services”.
