BIEVRES, France — ATEME™ SA, a world leader in H.264 video compression technology, today announced that its H.264 encoding solutions are now serving over one million French homes in HD.

Major French broadcasters including M6 and France2 Television have chosen to use ATEME’s H.264 encoders to provide HD video over low bitrates in order to reach millions of IPTV customers. Using ATEME’s bandwidth efficient H.264 solutions, ISPs are able to reach more customers over further distances with HD IPTV services.

“IPTV has reached mass market status in France. The reason for this success is due to a strong ADSL subscriber base of over 15 million customers, the good value for money offered by triple play services, and healthy competition amongst ISPs,” says Nicolas Bry, IPTV Specialist (nbry.wordpress.com). “By the end of this year, we will have between five and six million IPTV subscribers. Of those, I’d expect a quarter to have access to HD channels such as France 2 and M6 that use ATEME’s H.264 encoders. ”

“This is a milestone moment for ATEME as it shows the extent to which our H.264 solutions are addressing the potential growth opportunities of IPTV,” says Sylvain Riviere, Executive Vice President of Marketing at ATEME. “As more and more customers demand HD video for their new flat screen televisions, IPTV service providers will be looking at H.264 codecs that can encode video over IP with same picture quality as satellite and cable services.”
